Helen Sophie Anna (Grewe) Fischer was born on March 19, 1938, in Green Isle Township, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Edwin and Grace (Lange) Grewe. Helen was baptized as an infant at home by Pastor A. Julius Dysterheft, and later confirmed in her faith as a youth on May 11, 1952, by Pastor Karl J. Plocher at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Helen Township, Minnesota. Her confirmation verse was Psalm 119:105: “Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Helen received her early education at the St. John’s Lutheran Church School in Helen Township through the 8th Grade. She received her high school education at Stevens’ Seminary – Glencoe High School and graduated with the class of 1956.
On June 16, 1960, Helen was united in marriage to Fred Fischer by Pastor Karl J. Plocher at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Helen Township. Together, they made their home on a farm south of Glencoe. Helen and Fred were blessed with 3 daughters: Susan, Cindy, and Judith. The couple shared over 28 years together when Fred passed away on March 18, 1989.
Helen was a loving wife and mother; she assisted Fred with farm duties and lovingly cared for her three daughters. Helen was employed at Glencoe Foods for 2 years, Telex Communications for over 27 years, and later employed at the Chronicle/Advertiser for 10 years. Helen was a faithful and active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Helen Township. When she was young, Helen was a part of the Young People’s Society there, and later she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also a member of the Altar Guild, the Ladies’ Aide, and the weekly Bible Study.
Helen was a thoughtful and caring person who didn’t think twice when friends or family needed a ride to church, appointments, or anywhere they needed to go. Helen enjoyed going fishing with Fred over the years. She loved tending to her flower gardens, doing embroidery, and quilting. She enjoyed reading a good book, working on crossword puzzles, and playing cards. She had a knack for cooking and baking delicious treats. Helen truly cherished time spent with family and with friends. And her grandchildren and great-grandchildren played a very special part in her life.
