Obituary
Alice Louise Kaufmann was born on October 15, 1931, at Dr. Holm’s Hospital in Glencoe, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Wilhelm and Wilhelmina (Bargmann) Schwalbe. Alice was baptized as an infant at the hospital and later confirmed in her faith as a youth at St. John’s Church in Hassan Valley Township, rural Biscay, Minnesota. She attended Biscay School District 17 for eight years before transferring to Hutchinson High School in Hutchinson, Minnesota, graduating with the Class of 1949. The following year, Alice attended Glencoe Teacher Training.
On June 6, 1953, Alice was united in marriage to Maynard Kaufmann by Rev. Walter Fischer at St. John’s Church in Hassan Valley Township. This marriage was blessed with five children, Kathy, Karen, Warren, Julie and Roger. Alice and Maynard began raising their family in Biscay before moving to Hutchinson. They later made their home on the farm near Biscay. In 1992, Alice and Maynard moved to a lake home in Alexandria, Minnesota. They shared almost 50 years of marriage until Maynard passed away on April 23, 2003. After Maynard’s passing, Alice moved back to Hutchinson on Graham Street.
Alice taught at rural schools in McLeod County for five years until they started their family and she became a homemaker. She also sold Tupperware for a few years. As the kids grew older, she became employed at Burns Manor in 1979 as a housekeeper. Alice worked there for 15 years. She also did cleaning at Days Inn and cleaned apartments in Alexandria. Alice was an active lifelong member of St. John’s Church in Hassan Valley Township. She taught Sunday School for many years as well as served on the Women’s Guild and sang in the church choir. Alice also belonged to the Biscay Home Extension Group, and was a leader for the Hutchinson Royals Junior 4-H Club.
Alice was a caring individual. She enjoyed volunteering her time at Burns Manor and Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson. Alice loved to bake many treats and then give it all away. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially “500”, with the ladies from Glencoe and Hutchinson and going to the Senior Center for Bingo.
