Obituary

Verl Harold Ehlert was the oldest of three children born to Harry and Lydia Ehlert on February 12, 1929, in Stewart, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart by Rev. Lehane. When Verl was age 15 in 1944, he went to work for Henry Keiser as a welder in the shipyards until the end of WWII in 1945. The family returned to Stewart, and Verl graduated from Stewart High School in 1949.

Shortly after graduation, Verl joined the Hutchinson National Guard. In December, 1950, he was called into active service, and was stationed at Camp Rucker for basic training. Verl attended leadership and combat instruction foreman school at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. After all his training, he was sent to Korea in 1952. He fought with the 3rd Infantry Division. The platoon he was in ran out of sergeants, and he was put in charge of 30 men. They built roads, bridges, and mines. After his three-year enlistment, Verl was discharged in December, 1955. He returned to his home area, and ran a business in Buffalo Lake for five years.

On August 6, 1960, Verl was united in marriage to Marjorie Peters at Clark Methodist Church in Clark, South Dakota. Three children blessed this union, three more joined the family through marriage, and the family grew to add nine grandchildren. Verl and Marjorie lived in Stewart, and shared 55 years of marriage.

Verl was an employee at 3M for 32 years. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed going fishing and watching sports. He loved his family, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Verl was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart. He served on the church council on property management for three years, and taught a senior Sunday school class for two years. He also belonged to the Degree-Fleisch American Legion Post 125 in Stewart for 65 years.

On Monday, September 21, 2015, Verl passed away at the Hutchinson Health Hospital, having reached the age of 86 years.

Verl is survived by his Wife, Marjorie Ehlert of Stewart; Children: Steve Ehlert and his wife Karie of Maple Grove, Amy Knooihuizen and her husband Mike of Maple Grove, and Gregg Ehlert and his wife and Deanne of Baxter; Grandchildren:  Jackson, Brooke, and Grayson Ehlert, Mason, Abigail, and Madelyn Knooihuizen, and Emily, Andrew, and Katelyn Ehlert; Sister Rosemond Hedtke of Stewart; Nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Norma Vath and her husband Gordon.

May the Lord bless the memory of Verl Ehlert to all who love him and who sorrow at his death.
