Obituary

     Marianne Helen (Kubesh) Johnson was born in Troy Township, Renville County, Minnesota, on January 20, 1921, to Lucy (Wacek) and Joseph Martin Kubesh.  She graduated from St. Aloysius Catholic School in 1935 and Olivia High School in 1939.  She was employed as an accountant by the Land O’Lakes branch office in Olivia, Minnesota.

     On March 6, 1943, Marianne was united in marriage to Marvin Adolph Johnson at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia.  They farmed in Martinsburg Township, Renville County, Minnesota, for 45 years until retirement.  They enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe, having ancestors there, and also visiting their daughter, Luanne, stationed in Naples.  Marianne and Marvin later moved to Bird Island.  They observed their 65th wedding anniversary in 2008, and Marvin passed away later that year on October 18.  Following Marvin’s death, Marianne moved to Fairview Place in Olivia.

     Marianne was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church of Hector, Minnesota, where she served her church faithfully.  Her involvement included: a choir member for 54 years, a member of Council of Catholic Women, serving five years as its president, Parish Council Chairperson during the church’s first remodeling, serving on the Liturgy Committee, and a Life member of the Women’s National Catholic Order of Foresters.  She was a charter member of the Hope Circle of the CCW, and for a time she served as treasurer for the Region V Council of Catholic Women.  She taught CCD classes and co-directed their Christmas programs for over 20 years.  Marianne and Marvin spent six years as Renew Program Coordinators for the parish.  Marianne was awarded the Bishop’s Medal of Service to church and community.

     Marianne served her community in leadership in the PTA and as President of the Hector Federated Women’s Club.  For twenty years she served on the Hector Area Swimming Pool Commission, and for several years was appointed by the Village Council as chairman.  She was the secretary of the committee formed to build the Hector Area Swimming Pool.  Marianne was a charter member and President of Martinsburg Hospital Auxiliary at the time the Renville County Hospital was built.  She also gave two years in active leadership as part of the Speakers Bureau to defending land in this area from the burial of toxic waste.

Marianne is survived by her children:
     Paul D. Johnson and his wife Donna of Faribault, Minnesota,
     Dr. Luanne Turrentine and her husband William of Centreville, Virginia,
     Wayne M. Johnson and his wife Beverly of Willmar, Minnesota, and
     Dr. Norine Eckstrom and her husband Mark of Sarasota, Florida;

Grandchildren:  Alan Johnson, Lyn Johnson Rein, Alexis Turrentine, Joseph Eckstrom, and Andrea Eckstrom;

Great-Granddaughter Avery Mae Rein;

and by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

     Marianne was preceded in death by her husband Marvin, and by her sister Lucille Markuson.
