Obituary

Alice Ida Elisabeth Lindquist was born at home as the youngest child to Fredrick and Augusta (Lemke) Schwartz on October 4, 1927, in Lester Prairie, Minnesota. She was baptized at home and later confirmed at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. After attending parochial school through eighth grade and graduating from Lester Prairie High School in 1945, she married James Spellum and welcomed children, James and Mary. After their marriage ended, she was employed with 3M in Hutchinson. Alice was a descendant of the Greatest Generation. To her children, she was a wonderful example of hard work, grace, generosity and dignity. She met and married Robert Lindquist in Lester Prairie on August 5, 1967, and settled in Lafayette, Minnesota, where they were blessed with two daughters, Jenny and Anna.

Alice had a lifelong love of learning and had shelves full of books that were read many times over. She delighted in traveling and enjoyed trips to Germany and Sweden with her husband, Bob.

There was always music in her home, singing with her children and grandchildren. She mastered the art of Scandinavian knitting and made sure that her children and grandchildren had warm and beautiful mittens to wear. She was a wonderful cook and nobody ever left the table hungry!

Alice’s faith was foremost in her life. Her day did not begin until she read a chapter of the Bible with a cup of coffee. This love of Jesus was deeply instilled in her children as well.

Alice is survived by her:
Daughters, Mary Alice (Steve),
Jenny Augusta (Chad) and
Anna Mae;
Bob’s Children, Dean (Shirley),
Lyle (Carla),
Carol Ann (Greg);
Grandchildren, Charlie (Meg), Stacey, Joe, Ava (Kelly), Julia (Nick), Carl and Erik;
Great-Grandchildren, Jacoby and Zoey;
Nieces, Nephews, other relatives and friends.

Alice was preceded in death by her Parents, Fredrick and Augusta Schwartz; Husband, Robert; Son, James Theodore; Brothers, Clarence (Betty), Herbert (Dorothea), Leland (Hildegarde), Harold; Sister, Verdella, (Earl). Her best friend of 89 years, Mae Powell, passed away only three months before Alice.

Her Christian faith guided her many times, and many ways. Now, love has finally been answered by the One she had long trusted. She said many times that she anxiously awaited for the day where she would see Jesus’ face. She has.

    Dear Lindquist Family,

    You do not know us or our six children yet we want to share our condolences and let you know how much Alice meant to us. We had the privilege of knowing Alice (& Bob) through our 12 year membership at Zion Lutheran church…a church filled with other Quiet Legends. Her kindness, warmth, and faith always shone so clearly. Every Sunday, her face would light up when she saw our young children, and she was such a wonderful example to them of what it means to live with joy and grace.

    Alice was beloved by everyone who knew her—not only because of how she lived her Christian faith, but also in how she aged with dignity, positivity, and love for others. She touched many people, and we will always be grateful for her friendship and the example she set for our family. Now, Alice is with her Savior and while we rejoice in that, her passing leaves a void in your hearts, our hearts, and the hearts of many.

    Blessed be her memory.

    Your friends in Christ,
    Mark & Martha Santelman

      We deeply appreciate your warm words of comfort today and we’re so grateful that you saw our Mother the way we did, with love. She was blessed to have such good friends in her life. I hope you know how very much we appreciated your loving words. We know that Mom is with Jesus and since He is always with us, she can’t be far away.

    Thank you both for your note of comfort. It’s hard to say goodbye when you’ve spent almost 75 years with her, but then I feel humbled thinking of your Mom leaving so early. I think of you so often, RaNaye and remember all the talks we had. One of these days when we are town, we’ll stop by at the RedMan.

    Dear Mary and family, I loved your mother like she was my own mom. Your mom and my mom became good friends shortly after she married Bob. And also because Mary and I became such good friends, along with Eileen (Berg) Lee.
    Having lost my mom when I was only 30 I felt like I still needed a mom figure. Your mom was a great person to help fill that empty spot. I know I haven’t kept in touch recently, but have thought of you all often.
    Love to you all and prayers too.

    My dear Kathy, thank you for your sweet words. We really did have two amazing Moms, who loved us in spite of ourselves sometimes…but I know they were in cahoots with each other most of the time. Not too many people can say that two Moms AND their kids ended up to be best friends. Now they are resting just a few feet from one another and that gives me comfort. Let’s, the three of us, plan our next escape soon. Sending love right back to you.
