Obituary

Alice Marie Jahnke was born on January 27, 1929, in New Prague, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Iten) Suchomel. Alice was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth. She received her education in New Prague and was a graduate of the New Prague High School.  She furthered her education at Mankato State College and earned her teacher’s degree. She came to teach in Glencoe in 1948.

On June 28, 1952, Alice was united in marriage to Kenneth Jahnke at Holy Redeemer Church in Montgomery, Minnesota. The couple moved to Glencoe, Minnesota, where they resided until Ken’s death. Upon retirement, she lived at their lake home for 20 years before moving back to Glencoe to the Orchard Estates, where she loved reconnecting with life-long friends. Alice taught elementary and middle school in Glencoe and continued her love of teaching by substituting for the rural Alexandria School District into her mid-80s. Alice and Ken were blessed with two sons, Charles and Scott. Alice and Ken shared 38 years of marriage when Ken passed away on November 12, 1990.

Alice volunteered for the Glencoe Area and Douglas County Hospitals and was a member of multiple clubs and organizations over the years. Alice loved her animals and had many dogs and cats over the years. She loved to travel and meet new people. She also loved the time she spent with her family.

Alice was an incredible woman serving in so many roles. She helped those of all ages with teaching & volunteering. She was so thoughtful knitting a lovely cardigan for our child, & snow hats for Bruce. It seems – not that long ago we visited at Bumps with her weekly outing. She remained alert & fun to visit with as she aged, loving to get out. God rest her soul. Deepest sympathy to her family.

Mrs. Jahnke was my 2nd grade teacher in 1989. She ran a tight ship and took good care of us at Helen Baker Elementary. She was a good teacher, I remember we had quite a few troublemakers and kids with special needs in our class that year – she had her hands full, I remember that year quite clearly! I loved reading, and she would find extra reading books for me and spent time with me and a couple other kids to make sure we could keep reading levels up – she was accommodating and caring. Rest in peace, Alice, thank you for taking care of us.
