Carl John Selchow

Obituary

Carl John Selchow was born on January 8, 1916, in Plato, Minnesota.  He was the son of Charles and Frieda (Franke) Selchow. Carl was baptized as an infant on January 16, 1916, and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth on April 13, 1930, both by Rev. Boumann at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, Minnesota. Carl attended school at Emanuel Lutheran School in Hamburg. 

On May 18, 1941, Carl was united in marriage to Elsa Miller by Rev. Ehlen at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato, Minnesota.  The couple made their home in Plato until 2 years ago when they became residents at Grand Meadows Senior Living in Glencoe.  Carl and Elsa’s marriage was blessed with five children, Charles, Stuart, Ethel, Sherril and Gail.  They shared over 74 years of marriage.

Carl was a farmer and enjoyed working the land and tending to the animals.  He was a lifelong member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, Minnesota where he served on the school board, was a trustee, elder and custodian.  He was also a member of the Hamburg Lions and served as director/president for the Young America Mutual Insurance Company.

Carl enjoyed tractors, hunting, fishing, wood-working and flying in his son Stuart’s plane.  He also loved spending time at their cabin in Menahga, Minnesota.  Carl cherished the time spent with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Carl passed away on January 20, 2016, at his home in Grand Meadows Senior Living in Glencoe, Minnesota, at the age of 100 years and 12 days.
