Obituary

Darlene Erna Hermerding was born on October 12, 1940, in Howard Lake, Minnesota.  She was the daughter of Walter and Mathilda (Reetz) Hermerding.  Darlene was baptized as an infant by Rev. Seltz on November 10, 1940, and later was confirmed in her faith as a youth by Pastor Melinat on April 11, 1954, both at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, Minnesota. She received her education in Howard Lake, and was a graduate of the Howard Lake High School Class of 1958 where she was voted Homecoming Queen.

On September 20, 1958, Darlene was united in marriage to Donald Dale Dammann at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake. Three days later Don left for basic training as he was drafted into the Army.   Darlene joined him in Alexandria, Virginia for six months. They relocated to Bernhausen, Germany, where Don completed his service.  After returning home from Germany, Darlene and Don moved to the Dammann family farm in rural Glencoe, until they moved to their cabin on Lake Sylvia in South Haven, MN.  They later moved back to Glencoe and built a home in town. Their marriage was blessed with 3 daughters, Pam, Jodi and Sue. Darlene and Don shared over 62 years of marriage together.

Darlene worked at Gould’s Jewelry and the Style Shop in Glencoe. Darlene was also employed with the Johnson - McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe, Minnesota for 25 years as an Office Manager and a funeral assistant.  She was an active member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe, Minnesota where she was involved with the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, First Evangelical Lutheran Church Library, church choir and various other positions in the church. She was also a member of the Glencoe Concert Association and loved to volunteer at the Allina Health Hospice Thrift Store.

Darlene enjoyed gardening, tending to her indoor plants, decorating, and spending time on her patio. Darlene loved traveling and making memories with Don and spending time at their cabin with family and friends. Darlene’s pride and joy was having three daughters and seven grandchildren and watching them all grow and mature.

Darlene passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, July 9, 2021, at Grand Meadows Senior Living in Glencoe, Minnesota, at the age of 80.

Blessed be her memory.

My heart is broken for all of you. Darlene was such a calming influence when my dad passed away, guiding us through the day of Dad’s service. I don’t think we could’ve gotten thru that day otherwise (though she may not have realized her impact).

She loved her daughters – it was in her smile and the twinkle of her eye. She was beautiful and classic. Though she is gone from this world, she is still with you. You just need to listen and love.
