Dona Imogene Totman was born on January 29, 1927 in Bernadotte, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Herbert and Ora (Batchelder) Hed. Dona was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth. Dona was a devoted member of Faith United Church in Winthrop, Minnesota, throughout her life. She received her education in Winthrop and was a graduate of the Winthrop High School.

On November 20, 1948, Dona was united in marriage to Glenn Harvey Totman at the Methodist Church in Winthrop. During their marriage, Dona and Glenn were blessed with two children, Ronald and Glenda.
