Eugene L. Grewe, age 96, of Gaylord passed away Sunday, January 11, 2026, at Bayside Manor in Gaylord.
Funeral Service will be Saturday, January 17, 2026, 11:00 A.M. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mountville, Dryden Township, Sibley County, Minnesota, with interment in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday, January 16, 2026, from 4:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. and will continue one hour prior to the service, ALL at church.
Military Honors by the Manthey-Asmus American Legion Post #433 of Gaylord.
Memorials preferred to the Organ Repair Fund at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mountville, Gaylord, MN.
Obituary
Eugene Lloyd Grewe was born on August 15, 1929, to Martin August and Augusta Bertha (Schauer) Grewe, in Gaylord, Minnesota. He was baptized on August 25, 1929, by Pastor Gust J. Mueller and later confirmed in his faith on April 11, 1934, by Pastor M.S. Buenger, both at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mountville. Eugene attended St. John’s Lutheran Parochial School, grades one through eight and also one year at Gaylord High School. Besides helping on his parents farm, he worked construction, farm and business jobs until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1954. Eugene attained the rank of SP3 MEDICS during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany most of his time. He was honorably discharged in June 1956.
On October 12, 1957, Eugene was united in marriage to Carol Mae Mackenthun at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe. After their marriage the couple farmed the home farm in Dryden Township, Sibley County, Minnesota, until 1983 when Eugene was involved in an accident and was not able to farm. Eugene and Carol continued to live on the farm place until 2003 when they moved in the city of Gaylord. Eugene and Carol shared 66 years of marriage when Carol passed away on September 14, 2024.
Eugene was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church (Mountville), Gaylord, Minnesota. He held several church offices at St. John’s Lutheran Church (Mountville).
Eugene was also a member of Manthey-Asmus American Legion Post #433 in Gaylord and participated in the Honor Guard of Post #433. He was also a member of the VFW Post #5102 in Glencoe.
Eugene enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, traveling and watching sports. In the 1950’s he played “Town Ball” with the New Auburn and then Gaylord baseball teams. Eugene and Carol traveled to all 50 U.S. States, plus Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Mexico, Canada, Israel, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, England, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, and Lichtenstein.
Eugene passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at Bayside Manor in Gaylord at the age of 96 years. Blessed be his memory.

Close family friends, Ruth Grewe, Steve Goetsch and Glen Uecker;
Brothers-in-law, Donald Mackenthun of Fridley, MN, Arden Mackenthun of McHenry, IL;
Other relatives, nieces, nephews and friends.
Eugene was preceded in death by his Parents, Martin and Augusta Grewe; Wife, Carol Grewe; Brothers, Lorenz Grewe and his wife, Bernice, Edgar Grewe in infancy; Parents-in-law, Rudolph and Lillian Ida Mackenthun; Brother-in-law, Victor Mackenthun and his wife, Eunice; Sister-in-law, Carol Mackenthun; Niece-in-law, Amy Mackenthun; Great Nephew-in-law, Christopher Bromley.
