Obituary

Gwendolyn “Gwen’ Ann Scott was born on April 23, 1938, in Litchfield, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Raymond and Malvina (Schoolmeester) Nelson. Gwen was baptized as an infant on May 1st, 1938, and later confirmed in her faith as a youth on June 29th, 1949, at The Church of St. Philip in Litchfield. She received her education in Litchfield and was a graduate with the Litchfield High School class of 1956. She furthered her education at the Montessori School for Children.

On December 1st, 1962, Gwen was united in marriage to William Weston Scott at St. Paul & Augustine Catholic Church in Washington D.C. William was a Warrant Four Officer and pilot in the U.S. Army and served three years in the Vietnam war. They lived in California, West Virginia near his parents, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, and Litchfield. She spent a fair amount of time in West Virginia and is fondly thought of by Bill’s family and friends, especially his parents Mallie and Dixie Scott and their children who all loved her very much. This marriage was blessed with five children, Dion, Michael, Amber, Weston and Kathy Jo.

Gwen moved to Litchfield in June of 1970 after she and William parted ways. She made her new home at 422 South Yale, Litchfield, MN, from 1970 until 2015, where she was a single mother and raised her 5 children for the next 45 years. She was a very deep, strong and abiding faithful catholic who loved her faith and shared it with everyone in the way she lived it. She was a pianist and organist for many years at St. Philips Church where she grew up. She was also a third order Franciscan and faithfully participated in her order.

She was a loving mother who enjoyed life, lived it to the fullest, having many interests and hobbies. In the 1980’s, Gwen went to school and became a Montessori school teacher, which she loved. She enjoyed her membership in several organizations and clubs, Toast Masters, Bridge Club, Legion women’s Auxiliary, CCW, Daughters of Isabella, and loved playing all kinds of card games, especially whist, 500, bridge and cribbage and was very competitive until her last days. She made a TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) retreat and had many friends there spending time participating in many of their events, retreats and picnics over the years.

She was very fond of bible study, prayer group, swimming, volunteering at the Church as Eucharistic Minister and Lector. Gwen was always very patriotic and came from a family with a long line of members in the military, including her former husband, William Scott and sons, Dion, Michael, and Weston, as well as and many other family members and friends.
Gwen loved to share a meal; she was always having the family over to her house for holiday dinners. She was an excellent cook and really loved feeding her family and friends. She always made great holiday meals, made sure there was plenty of food, always fresh, homemade lemon meringue, fruit and pecan pies, cookies, brownies and so much more.

Gwen passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2025, at Kingsway Retirement Living in Belle Plaine, Minnesota, at the age of 86 years. Gwen will be greatly missed by family, friends and all her loved ones. You ran a long race Mom, and now you’re finally home. May God Bless you and may you rest in peace.
