Obituary
Homer “Sonny” Allen Barrick was born on December 6, 1937, in Litchfield, Minnesota. He was the son of Homer Charles and Helen Ann (Koepp) Barrick.
Sonny loved his family first and foremost and all other people he met. He extended a kind and generous spirit but often encountered and endured criticism and prejudice his whole life. The University of Minnesota found an inoperable mid-brain tumor and said that he would not make it past infant age. Having been nicknamed by Grandma Josephine who loved Sonny very much he became just that “Sunny”.
He worked 50 years in the farming industry and was known for his work ethic, his up beat personality, and of his high morale standards. The rest of his life, he was an active volunteer always coming early and staying late, usually directing traffic at the fairgrounds or family events. Sonny loved his county fair work as a herdsman for the horses and cows. He also enjoyed walking Relay for Life. He enjoyed volunteering at Vineyard Methodist Church and cleaning up roadside ditches of aluminum cans. Sonny enjoyed pulling contests whether it be cars, trucks, tractors, or horses (the louder the better). His love of farming was never more apparent than his trips to see his Amish friends. Their horse centered culture fit Sonny like a good pair of shoes. He enjoyed horses, good food, auctions, and his good loving Amish friends.
Sonny attended Vineyard Methodist Church in Hutchinson, where he attended Sunday School taught by his father. He was confirmed in his faith and was a lifetime member. The final chapter of Sonny’s life was played out at Harmony River Living Center where he was often visited by his special friends, nieces, and nephews. They would come to laugh and play with Sonny which created a feeling of warmth and laughter which would fill the room. This is a true testament to Sonny.
Sonny passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2020, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson, at the age of 83 years. Blessed be his memory.
