Obituary

Irene was born in Whitewater, Wisconsin, on March 5, 1933, to Minnie (Hecimovich) and Martin Evenson. Irene was the fifth of ten children. In the mid 1930s the family moved to the Hector, Minnesota, area. On Easter Sunday, April 21, 1946, Irene was baptized at the First Lutheran Church in Hector. On June 8, 1947, she was confirmed in her faith at the same church. She attended and graduated from Hector High School in 1951. After graduation, Irene worked as a homemaker’s helper.

In 1953 while uptown with her sister Shirley, Irene met a young man who was obviously smitten with her. The young man, Richard (Dick), told his friend he was going to marry that girl. True to his word, two years later, they became man and wife on June 4, 1955. The couple was so in love and Irene truly adored Dick.
This union was blessed with four children.

Irene enjoyed raising her family and being a homemaker. They, on their farm place, raised pigs, chickens, ducks, and cattle had a huge garden and a small apple orchard. Her days were filled with tending to the family, canning, freezing, and butchering what the couple raised.

In the early 1970s Irene worked outside the home at Fingerhut where she spent her days sewing for the company. In 1974, Dick and Irene bought a home in town in Hector. They loved their new home and spent time making it their own.

Sadly, on July 4, 1984, the bottom fell out of Irene's world when the love of her life, Dick, lost his battle with cancer. They cherished each other for 29 years and one month. She struggled with depression but worked at various jobs such as Suttle and ADC.

Irene kept busy with her growing family and tending her home, yard, and flowers. Her hobbies and interests included baking, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and quilting. She was so proud of her quilts and made sure all of her kids, grandkids, siblings, and close friends received one.

When, after a fall at home from a ruptured appendix, in April 2019, caused Irene to move from her home to the Buffalo Lake Nursing Home and later in October of 2019 to Prairie Senior Cottages in Hutchinson, Minnesota.
On October 3, 2020, after 36 years, Irene was reunited with her love, Dick.

Irene is survived by her Children, Jay (Jody) Haun, Denise "Dee" (John) Schaefer, Kerry Haun, and Lee (Karen) Haun; Grandchildren, Sam (Kristin) Haun, Andy Haun, John Jr. (Special friend Teresa Kuehl) Schaefer, Jason (Jessie) Schaefer, Justin (Karen) Schaefer, Jeff Schaefer, JoDee (Joel) Feitchtinger, Greg (Heather) Haun, and Ryan (Rachel) Haun; Fifteen Great Grandchildren; Sisters, Alice Tillmann, Shirley Osman, Merry Silvesan, and Karen Combs; Many Nephews, Nieces, relatives and friends.

My Sympathy to Irene’s family. I met Irene last fall thru the Senior Companion program for LSS. I enjoyed visiting with Irene and hearing of her stories of farm and family. She was a very sweet person. Unfortunately Covid arrived and I was no longer allowed to visit in person. I missed seeing her every week. May you rest in peace Irene. Deb
