Obituary

On April 28, 2020, Janet (Walsh) Peichel, age 88, of Fairfax, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at her rural home with her loving family by her side. Janet was born on February 8, 1932, in St. Paul, MN. Daughter of Thomas and Edith (Fabian) Walsh; she was one of nine children. She was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in her faith at the Nativity Church in St. Paul. She received her education at Nativity Parochial School and was a 1950 graduate of Derham Hall High School in St. Paul. After working summers as a nursing aide at Miller Hospital, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from St. Catherine’s College in 1953. Then Janet worked at Anker Hospital during the polio epidemic. As a nurse, she cared for patients at Northwestern Hospital and Northern Pacific Hospital. She had an interesting experience as a public health nurse for the City of St. Paul. Janet toured Europe with a friend during the summer of 1956.  She was working as an industrial nurse for Remington Rand Univac when she was introduced to Jerry on a blind date at the state fair.

On April 12, 1958, Janet was united in marriage to Gerald Peichel at Nativity Parish in St. Paul. After their wedding, the couple farmed in Ridgely Township, Nicollet County, Minnesota.  She was employed as an RN at the Fairfax Clinic and the Sleepy Eye Hospital.  She became a full-time mom when the children arrived. She and Jerry were blessed with eight children and 62 years of marriage.

Janet was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Fairfax and a member of the Ladies Aid, Christian Prayer Group and the American Legion Auxiliary #205. She enjoyed playing golf, bridge, baking, gardening, and entertaining people on Peichel’s Hill.

Janet is survived by her husband, Gerald Peichel, of Fairfax, Minnesota and children, George (Mary) Peichel, Marilyn VanOverbeke, Donna (David) Wehe, Paul (Mary) Peichel, Susan (Mark) Evans, and Barbara (TJ Yocum) Peichel. Her grandchildren brought a lot of love to her life: Rebecca, Edward, Anna, Grant, Luke, Jack, Ryan, Hayden, John, Caleb, Nic, and Alana.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, her son John, infant daughter Mary, three brothers and numerous other relatives.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Janet can be sent to Schoenstatt (German for Beautiful Place) on the Lake, 27762 CR 27, Sleepy Eye, MN 56085 or Mary Jo Copeland’s Sharing and Caring Hands, 525 N 7th St, Minneapolis, MN 55405. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Jan was a woman I admired. Smart, friendly. Always made you feel like there was no one in the world she’d rather see than you. Peace to her and her family.

Jerry and Family, Sorry to hear of Janet’s Passing. Although I didn’t meet her personally, I was a Camper of Ben Hoffman’s Crew on Peichel’s Hill, The “Grandma” of the bunch…being the oldest there…but have enjoyed your “Little piece of Heaven” in your backyard and I thank you for the peace and serenity that spot gave me while camping there. Janet sounds as she was a very caring and outstanding person that I would have enjoyed talking with. My prayers are with you all at this time and hope you know that many are thinking of you. May God give you His strength and courage for the months ahead as you share the beautiful memories that Janet gave you..
