Sorry to hear of the passing of yet another long-time neighbor & spouse of an NCO on the world’s first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus. Joan sure had a long and fulfilling life, the last day’s of which she spent near family. Back in the fall of 1965, I remember picking up corn with Joan, Cynthia & Melinda, et al, on Don Koenig’s harvested field. Active in local matters, Leeland &/or Joan guided the BL Onwards 4-H club, taught Gun Safety classes, served in the American Legion & “Aux”, etc. Such citizenship provided good examples for BL youth, to include myself, and on at least one occasion they praised me for a stance I took regarding the US flag. About ten years ago, I helped chronicle Lee & Joan’s life with an article that focused mostly on Lee’s submersible/true submarine service (the Silent Service, and Lee was sure silent about it for years). “Sr. Perspective” published the article ca. 2014 (not sure it’s still online). Anyway, all of these good memories will surely be a comfort as you deal with your loss.
Sincerely, Al Koenig, Commander/Historian, BL American Legion Post # 469
