Obituary

John Breidfjord Stubson was born on the Breidfjord family farm on February 12, 1937, in Gardar, North Dakota. He was the son of Harold and Thorunn (Breidfjord) Stubson. John was baptized as an infant on June 21, 1939, at the Lutheran Church in Mountain, North Dakota, and later confirmed in his faith as a youth on August 6, 1950, at United Lutheran Church in Cavalier, North Dakota. He received his education at various schools in Billings, Montana, Gardar and Cavalier, and was a graduate of the Cavalier High School Class of 1955. John furthered his education at North Dakota School of Forestry in Bottineau, North Dakota and graduated in 1957.

John entered active military service in the United States Marine Corps on June 13, 1957, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. John completed Sea School in December 1957 and served as part of the Marine Detachment aboard the USS Hornet Attack Carrier and later the USS Pendleton. John finished his military service as a training instructor/rifleman for the 2nd Infantry in Camp Pendleton, California. John received an Honorable Discharge on June 12, 1960, and achieved the rank of Corporal.

On July 1, 1960, John was united in marriage to Doris Elke at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Cavalier. They shared 62 years of marriage. This marriage was blessed with two sons, Brett and Brian. John and Doris resided in Glencoe and at their lake home on 5th Crow Wing near Nevis, Minnesota. He later moved to Hutchinson, and lived at the Village Cooperative where he cherished the friendships, he had with so many of his neighbors.

After marriage, John continued his education at North Dakota State University in Fargo, graduating in May 1962, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Biology. He later attended Mayville State College, Mayville, North Dakota and graduated with an education degree in 1963 and completed his Master of Science teaching degree at the University of North Dakota on August 10, 1968.

John taught science at Fessenden Public School in Fessenden, North Dakota, from 1963 to 1966, Mayville Public School from 1967 to 1968, and at Glencoe-Silver Lake Public School in Glencoe, Minnesota, from 1968 to 1996. Upon his retirement, John enjoyed living by the lake with his wife and frequent visits from family and friends.

John enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and hunting. He enjoyed making wooden crosses that were shared by his church’s mission trips to Ethiopia, Mongolia, Honduras and elsewhere. He started Stubson’s Tackle Repair business during the 1970’s and 1980’s, and volunteered at the Nevis Senior Center in Nevis, the 5th and 6th Crow Wing Association Board and the Village Cooperative. John especially enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, and friends.

Mr. Stubson was one of my favorite teachers- as indicated by being some of my passwords and answers to secret questions over the years.

Being friends with Brian, often lead me to frequent visits with him outside of school. He was one of the greats! My deepest sympathy to the family, especially Brian and Betsy!

He’ll hold a special place in my heart- ??Sheri Sergent (Bump)

I am glad that on my train ride through life I got to know John when I lived at the Village cooperative in Hutchinson.
I remember him as a kind gentleman. My sympathies to his family and all those of us who were fortunate to be able to call him our friend.
