Obituary

Marilyn Rae Ryan Shaw was born on December 8,1944, at the Willard Hospital in Manchester, Iowa. She was the first and one of three daughters born to Paul William Ryan and Rosemary McGraw Ryan. She was raised in the Catholic faith. Marilyn graduated from East Buchanan Community High School in May of 1963. She was united in marriage to Charles Eugene Shaw in September of that year. The union was blessed with two sons, Patrick and Matthew. Marilyn loved and encouraged her boys. They could always find Mom in the bleachers cheering them on and she was always there to listen and lend advice as they grew older.

Marilyn had many talents. As a young lady, she played the accordion and was a member of a band playing jazz and rock and roll. She also played the piano and the organ and said she loved to dance. She and Charlie enjoyed traveling in their motor home and playing cards. She liked to read, surf the internet, and complete brain teasers such as cross words and sudokus. She was interested in unusual finds and liked to visit antique stores and had a knack for decorating with her found treasures.

Marilyn’s career was in banking. Her last job before retirement was with Zion State Bank in Salt Lake City, Utah. During her lifetime, she lived in Iowa, Denver Colorado, Salt Lake City, Utah and finally Hutchinson, Minnesota; her last move to be near her children and grandchildren. For the last few years, she has resided at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson where the staff described her as a blessing and a shining light because of her smile. She loved Colorado and asked that the Rocky Mountains be her final resting place and to play the song, "Far Side Banks of Jordan." Her sons will honor that request by finding a beautiful place for her ashes.

Marilyn was a devoted wife and a loving mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister. Marilyn is survived by her son Patrick, his wife Heather, daughter Haley (Victor), grandson Victor, son Alex (Jenna), granddaughter Olivia and her son Matthew, his wife Deana and son Ryan. She is also survived by her sister, Carol and husband Pat. She was proceeded in death by her husband of 59 years, Charlie Shaw, her parents, Paul and Rosemary Ryan and her sister, Connie Ryan Shaw.

She was asked in her later years what made her happy and she replied, "Happy people make me happy." Marilyn was charming, witty, and had a great laugh. Marilyn left us on May 20th, 2024. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
