Obituary

Nancy Gwendolyn (Opitz) Dammann was born on August 30, 1949, in Glencoe, Minnesota. She was the oldest daughter of Elsworth and Iona (Muchow) Opitz. Nancy was baptized as an infant on September 18, 1949, and later confirmed in her faith as a youth on June 2, 1963, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in rural Brownton, Minnesota. She graduated from Brownton High School in 1967. She continued her education at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, MN, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. Following that, she attended Mankato State University in Mankato, MN, and received her Master’s in Elementary Education.

On July 27, 1974, Nancy was united in marriage to Darroel Dammann at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Brownton. The couple was blessed with two children: Megan and Timon. They made their family home in Young America. Nancy and Darroel shared over 51 years of marriage.

Nancy loved her career as an Elementary School Teacher. She worked for the Waconia School District for 34 years, retiring in 2007. Her motto was “to teach is to love.” She was a charter member and an active member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Norwood Young America, and she sang with the choir for over 40 years. She enjoyed tending to her flower gardens and feeding birds. Nancy loved to travel over the years to Colorado, the family cabin on Mille Lacs Lake, and numerous friend & family vacations. She loved relaxing with a good book and meeting with her book club. Nancy also loved meeting up with her coffee groups, attending retiree luncheons, and celebrating with her extended family. The time she cherished most, though, was spent with her husband, children, and grandchildren.

    Dear Megan and Family,
My heart goes out to you on the death of your dear Mother. I did not know her but I can see her reflection in you and your beautiful daughters. As you said, there are no words only overwhelming sadness and love.
As I have shared before, my Mother died early too and please know that I am here anytime you need to talk and my heart will listen. Fred and Alana Friedman

Our hearts and prayers go out to the entire Dammann family. Truly an amazing person.
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

I knew Nancy from our youths in Penn township, St. Matthews (Penn) Lutheran Church, and Brownton High School. Many fond memories of her and her friendly personality and charm. My condolences and blessings to her family. May she rest in peace.

Nancy and I were neighbors & friends growing up, rode the same bus, one year apart at school and went to the same church. She was always sweet, kind and attractive. I enjoyed seeing photo’s on Facebook of the trips her and her husband took and of her beautiful grandchildren. Her precious memories will live on in your hearts forever. My sympathy to
her entire family. In friendship, Lea Ette (Hantge) Peters
