Kolbe, and later confirmed in his faith as a youth on May 7, 1944, by Pastor Streufert, both at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe. He attended school in the Sibley Township schoolhouse and the Lutheran Parochial School through the 8th grade. Ralph entered active military service in the United States Army on January 16, 1952, serving as a CPL(T) 30 during the Korean War. He received an Honorable Discharge on October 30, 1953.

Ralph was a lifelong devoted member and attendee of First Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Glencoe VFW Post #5102.
Ralph loved his elk hunting trips to Colorado and the fishing trips he took with his family. He also loved deer and duck hunting. He loved spending winters in Arizona and Texas with Marjorie. And Ralph truly cherished the time he spent with family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.
