Verna Elvern Schiro

Obituary

Verna Elvern Frieda Schiro was born April 22, 1928 in Hutchinson, Minnesota, the daughter of Otto and Ida (Ewald) Schlueter. She was baptized as an infant on May 20, 1928, and was confirmed on May 3, 1942, both at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Mills Township, Meeker County, Minnesota. She grew up in the Cedar Mills area, and attended District 55 Country School and St. John’s Parochial School.

On August 15, 1948, Verna was united in marriage to Donald Schiro at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Mills Township. This marriage was blessed with four children, Linda, Laurel, LuAnn, and Leland. In 1994, Verna and Donald moved into their new home in Cosmos. In January of 2018, they moved to the Oaks in Hutchinson. They shared 69 years of marriage together.

Verna helped with the farming operation in her earlier years. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church of Cosmos. Verna had a huge garden, and did lots of canning and baking, making six loaves of bread each week from scratch. Verna made numerous layettes, quilts, and Pastor stoles for her church, and made many quilts for her children and grandchildren. She loved crocheting, sewing, putting puzzles together, playing cards, and watching Wheel of Fortune and the Minnesota Twins. Verna had fun playing Bingo at the Oaks, too. She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

On Thursday, April 5, 2018, Verna passed away at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, preparing the way for her husband Don who passed two days later. She had reached the age of 89 years, 11 months, and 14 days. Blessed be her memory.

Step-Grandchildren: Steve (Rachel) Staab, Amy (Chuck) Molitor;
Step-Great-Grandchildren: Anthony Staab, Dominick Staab, Braydon Staab, Azure Staab, James Neuvirth, Nathan Neuvirth, Nathaniel Molitor;
Sister, Lorene Flemming of Hutchinson;
nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Verna was preceded in death by her Parents, Otto and Ida Schlueter; Granddaughter Sherri Schiro in infancy; Sister, Irene Hoff and her husband Elmer; Sister, Delores Kohls and her husband Clifford; Brother, LeRoy Schlueter; Brother-in-law, Merrill Flemming; Sister-in-law, Leone Anderson and her husband Eldred (Bud); Nephew, James Flemming; Brother-in-law, Duane Schiro in infancy; Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, Arthur and Marion Schiro.
