Obituary

Verone Marjorie (Peterson) Langhorst was born on December 31,1920, in Nicollet County, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Raymond and Esther (Johnson) Peterson and the oldest of 5 children.  She was baptized and confirmed at Brighton Methodist. She attended District 65 country school in Nicollet county through the 8th grade and then went on and graduated from St. Peter High School.

After high school, she attended Mankato Beauty School and worked as a beautician in New Ulm. She married Elmer Langhorst on August 27, 1943, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Courtland. In 1948, they moved to the Bernadotte area and farmed the farm she grew up on. This is the farm her son and daughter-in-law (Steve and Mary) reside on today. They were blessed with 5 children, Diane, Rita, Linda, Carol and Steven.

In 1980, they moved to Gaylord to their "Dream Home". They enjoyed the years at 750 Woodland Drive where they hosted  many, many celebrations with family and friends. Verone was known for her good cooking and baking .... especially for her all-time favorite - her home-made buns!!

Verone and Elmer shared 60 years of marriage until Elmer's passing on April 16, 2004.  Verone remained in her home until 2016,  when she moved to an apartment at Oak Terrace Retirement Community.  She enjoyed her apartment and continued to have her family and friends come and join her for a cup of coffee and a little dessert.

Besides enjoying her family, Verone liked getting together with her Bernadotte friends and the Gaylord neighborhood ladies. She was a member of Bernadotte Lutheran Church and Women of the ELCA. She enjoyed planting her many flowers and keeping all her plants looking nice around her home. She strongly believed in accomplishing something each day, and that "common sense" goes a long way.

Verone is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Diane Harbarth of Gaylord, Rita and David Heinrich of Battle Lake, Linda Meyer of Rochester, Carol and Jim Young of Winthrop; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Mary Langhorst of Lafayette; 12 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Verone was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Esther Peterson; husband, Elmer Langhorst; son-in-law, Roger Harbarth; grandson-in-law, Max Blair; sister, Eleanore Nelson; brothers, Harlan, Eldon and Ronald Peterson; brother-in-law, Myron Nelson.

A special Thank you to the Staff at Bayside Manor that assisted with Verone's care.  The family appreciates all the time you gave to their precious Mother.

Rest In Peace Grandma in-law Verone. You always took the time to do your perfect hair and get pretty for your guests all while hosting holidays & dinner for your extended family. You were always the last to sit and the first to get up if anyone needed anything at the table. The perfect hostess! Say ‘Hi’ to Elmer for us. (heart emoji) Love You!

A grand lady she was. Verone was both direct and candid, a trait far too few women of her era possessed. I hosted many birthday celebrations for my own mother as well as the Monday Morning Club gatherings of which Verone was a guest. I paid attention when Verone spoke. I’ve kept her words of wisdom in my heart and hope I’ve put them to good practice. Her life is to be celebrated. I know her family will do so with gusto.
