Obituary

Viola Jessie Lang was born in Lafayette Township, Easter Sunday, April 12, 1925, to Henry and Emma (Johns) Fischer. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Brighton Township, Nicollet County, Minnesota. The family farmed east of Klossner. Viola completed her 8th grade education at District 31 in Brighton Township. In her later teen years, she lived and worked in New Ulm at the Dakota Hotel and the Beehive Variety Store.

Viola met her husband, Arnold Lang at the Golden Rule Ballroom/Klossner House. They later married on September 30, 1944, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Brighton Township. Viola and Arnold resided in New Ulm until 1951 when they moved to rural Winthrop, where they raised their three children: Rhonda, Monte, and Brenda. Viola and Arnold enjoyed dances, playing cards, gathering with family and friends, and attending community events together.

Together they farmed and ran a large hog operation until Arnold passed away suddenly at age 60 on February 24, 1981. She continued to farm with her son, Monte, until 1987. In 1982, Viola obtained her GED and Nursing Assistant Certification. She was employed at Sibley County Public Health and the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center, retiring at the age of 78.  She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels many years after.

Viola was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1951. She was a member of the Ladies Guild, Young at Heart and the Winthrop Senior Citizens.

Viola loved her home and farm place, welcoming all three children, seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, along with other family and friends. Her hobbies included gardening and tending to her flowers, sewing, reading, crossword puzzles, dominoes, and playing cards. She also enjoyed mowing lawn until she was 90 years old. Viola loved her pets, Buddy, Lizzie and Max, who kept her entertained daily.

Viola has lived on her farm for 70 years. The last five years, Viola was cared for by her daughter, Brenda, and other family members in her own home until her peaceful passing on April 24, 2021, at the age of 96 years. She will be sadly missed. Bless her memory.

Viola is survived by her:
Children,         Rhonda (Larry) Steinberg of Garfield, MN,
Monte (Diane) Lang of Vadnais Heights, MN, and
Brenda Lang of Winthrop, MN;
Grandchildren, Jon (Leigh) Werner, Adrienne Eklund (Roger Hatcher), Aaron Lang, Amelia Harden, Paul (Renae) Schwarzrock, Jan (Brian) Schwarzrock-Carlson, Mark Schwarzrock (Nicole Miller);
12 Great-Grandchildren, Nora, Jack, Ty, Wyatt, Ian, Kurt, Ryder, Owen, Jada, Kora, Josie, and Joslyn;

    Our human nature was saddened to learn that Viola was called home. One of the blessings of belonging to Zion Lutheran was all of the wonderful members, and we count Viola as one of them. She was always so delightful and pleasant and encouraging each time we interacted with her. We will miss Viola tremendously and yet we know her forwarding address…HEAVEN! Blessings on your reunion we call a funeral…He is Risen!
