Obituary

Walter “Wally” Runtzel was born April 25, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Paul and Anna (Schmaltz) Runtzel. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith, and was later confirmed in the Catholic faith. Wally grew up in the Mankato area, and lived there for 40 years. In 1943, Wally entered his service with the U.S. Army, and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during WWII. He was honorably discharged on April 3, 1946.

On June 21, 1949, Wally was united in marriage to Marvyl Sonnek at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Easton. They made their home in the Mankato area until 1980 when they moved to Hector. Wally worked for National Tea, and was a buyer for a wholesale drug company. After relocating to Hector, he was employed by Marigold Foods in sales. He also worked with the spray crew for Green Giant, and drove school bus for the BLH school district for 15 years. Wally and Marvyl had shared 59 years of marriage when Marvyl passed away on December 5, 2008. Walter continued to live in their home in Hector.

Wally was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hector. He also belonged to the Carl O. Potter American Legion Post 135 of Hector. He was a big sports fan, especially of the Minnesota Vikings and Twins. In his earlier days he played fast pitch softball, and was a member of a traveling team. He enjoyed fishing earlier in his life, and always enjoyed bowling and golfing. Wally loved his church, and daily coffee and conversation with his friends at the C-store.

On Wednesday, July 5, 2017, Wally passed away at his home in Hector, having reached the age of 92 years. Blessed be his memory.

     Wally is survived by his:
