Obituary

Gary Bruce “Moose” Metag was born on February 5, 1950, in Hutchinson, Minnesota.  He was the son of Lyle and Hazel (Wenz) Metag. Gary was baptized as an infant on April 23, 1950, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hector, Minnesota and later was confirmed in his faith at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe, Minnesota.  He received his education in Glencoe, Minnesota.

Gary enlisted with the United States Army on September 18, 1967, from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He achieved the rank of Specialist Four. Gary was in Vietnam from March 1968 to March 1969, and in Germany from April 1969 to September 1970.  He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, two Overseas Bars, an Air Medal, and a Sharpshooter M-14 Badge. Gary was honorably discharged on September 8, 1970.

On August 24, 1974, Gary was united in marriage to Mary Ryan at the Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe, Minnesota.  Gary and Mary shared 48 years of marriage.  The couple made their home in Glencoe, Minnesota. Gary and Mary’s marriage was blessed with two children, Kelly and Erik.

He was employed by Mayer Oil of Glencoe, MN, then Robel Transfer of St. Cloud, MN, and Wayne Transports Inc. of Rosemount, MN; he drove for Wayne Transports Inc. until his retirement in 2015. Gary took great pride in driving perfectly shiny, clean semi-trucks and cars. Gary was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe, MN. He was also a member of the Glencoe American Legion. In 1978, he purchased a 1962 Chevy Corvette and spent countless hours working on it. Gary enjoyed relaxing on his patio, frequenting car shows, and assisting his son, Erik, at Glencoe Collision Center, detailing cars.  Family was very important to him, and he cherished the fact that family was nearby and that he could spend quality time with them often.

We sure had some fun times in our youth and you always made life interesting and if I do say so with your 67 Mustang and my 67 GTO we added some excitement to the streets of Glencoe. I will miss you and I am proud to have known you. Rest in Peace Crew Chief from a Grunt that knows what you endured in the skies of Vietnam!

We miss you & always love you Uncle. What will we do without your silly jokes, and funny antics? Huge hole is so many hearts. But so thankful you are out of pain, and are at peace. Give all hugs up there. I’m sure you and your brothers are in trouble already. Haha, God bless you Uncle.

My deepest condolences to Kelly and her family on the loss of her father. May your memories help you through times of grief now and in the future. My mother shared a love of butterflies and collected $2 bills. Now whenever I see a butterfly or $2 bill, I think of her. May you have your own special recollections.

While 6 years older than Gary, I ran into him, by chance, in the middle of Vietnam. Not many fun times over there, but spending some some with Gary was a real day brightener sharing Glencoe stories!

Rest In Peace and prayers for his family

So sorry for your help Mary and family. Had some good memories with Moose. Between motorcycles and cars and a few crazy nights at Plato we had a good time. I will miss you and I’m happy to have been able to call you my friend.
