Gary B. “Moose” Metag, age 72, of Glencoe, Minnesota, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at his home.
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, September 3, 2022, 11:00 A.M. at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe, Minnesota with interment at a later date in the Christ Lutheran Church Columbarium.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 2, 2022, from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M., at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe, Minnesota, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Military Honors by the Glencoe Military Honor Guard.
Obituary
Gary Bruce “Moose” Metag was born on February 5, 1950, in Hutchinson, Minnesota. He was the son of Lyle and Hazel (Wenz) Metag. Gary was baptized as an infant on April 23, 1950, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hector, Minnesota and later was confirmed in his faith at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe, Minnesota. He received his education in Glencoe, Minnesota.
Gary enlisted with the United States Army on September 18, 1967, from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He achieved the rank of Specialist Four. Gary was in Vietnam from March 1968 to March 1969, and in Germany from April 1969 to September 1970. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, two Overseas Bars, an Air Medal, and a Sharpshooter M-14 Badge. Gary was honorably discharged on September 8, 1970.
On August 24, 1974, Gary was united in marriage to Mary Ryan at the Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe, Minnesota. Gary and Mary shared 48 years of marriage. The couple made their home in Glencoe, Minnesota. Gary and Mary’s marriage was blessed with two children, Kelly and Erik.
Gary was an over-the-road truck driver for 10 years and continued driving truck closer to home for many years to follow. He was employed by Mayer Oil of Glencoe, MN, then Robel Transfer of St. Cloud, MN, and Wayne Transports Inc. of Rosemount, MN; he drove for Wayne Transports Inc. until his retirement in 2015. Gary took great pride in driving perfectly shiny, clean semi-trucks and cars. Gary was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe, MN. He was also a member of the Glencoe American Legion. In 1978, he purchased a 1962 Chevy Corvette and spent countless hours working on it. Gary enjoyed relaxing on his patio, frequenting car shows, and assisting his son, Erik, at Glencoe Collision Center, detailing cars. Family was very important to him, and he cherished the fact that family was nearby and that he could spend quality time with them often.
Gary passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at his home in Glencoe, Minnesota, at the age of 72 years.

Siblings, Joyce Carrigan and her husband, Curt, Molly Streu and her husband, Tom, Jan Kroeger, Jackie Jensen, and her fiancé, Marc;
Brothers and Sisters-in-law, Vince Ryan and his wife, Anne, Sharon Schwarze and her husband, Kurt, Bill Ryan;
Aunt, Elvira Levens;
Many Nieces, Nephews, Other relatives, and Friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his Father, Lyle Metag; Mother, Hazel Gruenwaldt, and her husband, Alvin; Parents-in-law, Vincent and Viola Ryan; Siblings, Julie Metag, Terry Metag, Larry Metag; Brother-In-Law, Milo Kroeger.

While 6 years older than Gary, I ran into him, by chance, in the middle of Vietnam. Not many fun times over there, but spending some some with Gary was a real day brightener sharing Glencoe stories!
