Obituary
Alice Bertha Clara (Rickert) Grunewaldt was born on February 29, 1912, in Round Grove Township, rural Brownton, Minnesota, to Otto and Clara (Schlueter) Rickert. She was baptized as an infant on March 10, 1912, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Penn Township by Pastor George Diemer. She received her Christian education at parochial school in Brownton and was confirmed in her faith on April 2, 1925, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton by Pastor Henry Weerts.
Alice was united in marriage to Arnold Grunewaldt on September 2, 1936, by Pastor Henry Weerts at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton. One daughter, Marlys was born to this union. The couple made their home on Arnold’s family farm by Winthrop. Alice worked side by side with him. Arnold passed away on April 26, 1972. They shared 36 years of marriage. After he passed away, she continued to farm alongside her daughter and son-in-law. Eventually she moved in and lived with her daughter and her family. After she retired from farming, she was employed at Green Giant in Glencoe and Arlington, Minnesota, for several years. She then worked at Hands, Inc. in Winthrop for over 25 years, finally retiring at the age of 90. She became a resident of Oak Terrace Health Care Center in Gaylord in May of 2014, when she needed assistance with her daily care.
Alice and Arnold were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mountville for several years and then they joined St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Penn Township. She was active in the circle and was the oldest member at St. Matthew’s until it closed in 2015. She became a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Brownton.
Alice loved playing cards, gardening, fishing, traveling and last but not least dancing. Every weekend you would more than likely find her at some polka dance. Her 100th birthday was celebrated with a polka party. Alice enjoyed traveling in her 70’s with a group of friends all over the United States and also toured Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Mexico and Canada. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and cherished each moment with them.
Alice will always be remembered for her love of dancing and her hard work. Alice passed away with her family by her side on Sunday, August 7, 2016, at Oak Terrace Health Care Center at the age of 104 years, 5 months and 5 days. Blessed be her memory.

Don Bartels says
Sorry to hear of the passing of Alice. I knew her since I was a little fella out at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Penn township. She did love her dances and I had the pleasure of having a few of those with her over the years. I’m going to see if I can go into the archives and find that news segment from her 100th birthday at Pla-Mor ballroom. It was always fun talking to her no matter what the occasion was.
God bless her memory and her family.
