Obituary
Alice Alvina (Havemeier) Brede was born on May 16, 1925, at the Loretta Hospital in New Ulm, Minnesota, to Arthur and Jenny (Hengry) Havemeier. She was baptized at her home and later confirmed into her faith on April 2, 1939, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Courtland, MN. She received a diploma on June 25, 1939, from Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church School for completing the studies prescribed for 8th grade.
Along with her sisters, Alice worked on the family farm with her father, Arthur. One of her favorite memories shared with her sister, Beverly, was when she would put locks in Beverly’s hair. Years later, she worked at the laundromat in New Ulm, Minnesota. Alice met her soulmate Arthur Brede at George’s Ballroom in New Ulm. They were united in marriage on June 24, 1947, at Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Courtland, Minnesota. The couple made their home at the Brede family farm. Alice and Arthur were blessed with two children, Arla and Karin. The couple shared over 65 years of marriage until Arthur passed away on January 31, 2013.
Alice worked very hard her whole life, never one to be still for long. Alice loved to tend to her flower gardens, spending hours and hours pulling weeds. In her younger years, Alice looked forward to going fishing at Breezy Point with her husband, Arthur. Alice also looked forward to spending time at her cabin at Breezy Point. Alice was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Fernando, Minnesota, and was part of the Ladies’ Aide for many years.
When the couple needed assistance with their daily care, Alice moved to Orchard Estates to help care for her husband who was a resident in the Long-Term Care at Glencoe Regional Health Services. In October of 2019, Alice moved to The Gardens At Winsted in Winsted, Minnesota. Alice passed away there peacefully with her family by her side on October 13, 2023, at the age of 98 years, 4 months, and 28 days. Blessed be her memory.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Reverend Aaron Albrecht for visiting Alice frequently and sharing communion with Alice and her daughters, Arla and Karin.

My sincere condolences to Alice’s family! Art & Alice were such a huge part of my childhood memories, from sitting by them in church to picking raspberries at their farm & vacationing at their cabin up north to getting excited see their little blue truck pull up our driveway. They always treated my whole family so well. They were like grandparents to me. They were such kind, faith-filled, family orientated people, who I have always strived to be like. Thank you for sharing them with me & my family for years! They will both always hold a very special place in my heart.

Mike and I just read Alice’s obituary. We sure did enjoy seeing her at the Fall Festival! We are now spending time in Arizona and moving there in the next couple of months when Mike retires from 3M. I hope you girls are rejoicing in how strong her faith was! She is watching over you and smiling with that sweet angelic smile that she has. Blessings to you both during this holiday season which I am sure will be tough without your beloved Mother.
