Alvin “Al” Ulrich, age 87, of Buffalo Lake, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2021, at Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center in Buffalo Lake, Minnesota.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at 11:00 A.M. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake, Minnesota, with interment in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held one hour before the service at 10:00 A.M. at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Military Honors by Hector Military Honor Guard.
Obituary
Alvin “Al” Ulrich was born on July 5, 1934, in Glencoe, Minnesota. He was the son of George and Gladys (Hoecke) Ulrich. Alvin was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth. He received his education in Buffalo Lake, and was a graduate of the Buffalo Lake High School Class of 195¬2. He then continued his education at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
Alvin entered active military service in the United States Army at Fort Sheridan in Illinois on November 19, 1957. He received honorable discharge from active duty on August 18, 1959. He achieved the rank of E-4. He continued to serve in the United States Army Reserve until November 18, 1963.
On October 20, 1956, Alvin was united in marriage to Barbara Nelson at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake. This marriage was blessed with three children, Timothy, Julie, and Jeffrey. Alvin and Barbara resided in Buffalo Lake. They shared 63 years of marriage prior to Barbara passing away in 2020.
Alvin was a lifelong farmer in Hector Township and also sold insurance for many years for Ulrich General Agency in Buffalo Lake. He retired in 2000 and the farming operation was passed on to his son Timothy Ulrich and Grandson Benjamin Ulrich.
Al was a Charter member of the Buffalo Lake Lions Club, a member of the Buffalo Lake School Board, and served on the Renville County Water Shed District Committee. He was a past president of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and served on other various church committees. Al was also a member of the Gideons International. His leadership, kindness, and care for others will be greatly missed by everyone.
Al enjoyed fishing, wood working, going on pontoon rides, playing cards, and traveling to Branson, Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and the Panama Canal. In his spare time, Al would go to the local jail and speak to, as well as counsel inmates for the Gideons International. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends.
When Al needed additional care, he entered the Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center in 2017 and was in and out of care with various health issues. Alvin passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2021, at Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center, at the age of 87 years. Blessed be his memory.

Grandchildren, Benjamin Ulrich and his wife, Becky, Travis Ulrich, Nicole (Ulrich) Glaze and her husband, Brandon, Heather (Meier) Brewers and her husband, Darrin, Heidi (Meier) Lagred and her husband, Zachary, Kyle Meier and his wife, Brody, Zachary Ulrich, Tucker Ulrich, and Mya Ulrich;
11 Great-Grandchildren;

Sisters-In-Law, Rosie Nelson of Hutchinson, MN,
Darlene Williams of Grand Rapids, MN;

Alvin is preceded in death by his Wife, Barbara Ulrich; Parents, George and Gladys Ulrich; Brother-In-Law, Eugene Olson.

Alvin was such a great man. I had a rough senior year in HS and he was there just to listen and let me vent. I ran into him a few times since and he was still interested in what was going on and how I was doing. He will be missed.

I had the privilege of knowing and working with Al while he was the Secretary/Manager of Buffalo Lake Mutual Ins. Co. He was always polite and just a wonderful person to know and work with – in particular I always remember his infectious laugh! I extend my sympathy to Alvin’s family – he will be missed.
