Obituary
Betty Jean Eggert was born on June 12, 1939, at her home in Acoma Township, Hutchinson, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Otto and Clara (Hollmann) Holtz. Betty was baptized on July 9, 1939 and confirmed in her faith on May 24, 1953. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School and later attended Hutchinson High School, graduating with the Class of 1957.
On July 6, 1958, Betty was united in marriage to Wayne Eggert at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Acoma Township, Hutchinson, Minnesota, where she was a life-long member. This marriage was blessed with three daughters, Tammy, Wanda, and Julie. Betty and Wayne made their home at the family farm in Boon Lake Township, Hutchinson, Minnesota. They moved to Ecumen Oaks in Hutchinson, Minnesota in October 2019. Betty and Wayne were blessed with 63 years of marriage, until Wayne’s passing on October 10, 2021. Betty always put Wayne first. They were two peas in a pod.
Betty maintained a loving home and was a devoted and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. During her lifetime, Betty was employed at Peg’s Drive-in, Green Giant and S & L and JC Penney clothing stores. Betty’s most recent employment was with 3M Company for 31 years. She retired in 1997.
As a farmer’s wife, Betty helped Wayne with daily chores and management of the farm. She assisted with unloading hay, driving tractor, picking rocks; all while loving the outdoors. Betty also helped Wayne with their garden which supplied the family with many jars of canned salsa, garlic pickles and tomato sauce.
If you could find her indoors, some of Betty’s passions were sewing and quilting blankets, reading, crossword puzzles, enjoying a good cup of coffee and listening to old time polka music and Elvis. She also enjoyed picking up sticks around the farm site.
There was never a time that she didn’t want to stop at a garage sale. She always commented that she “just wanted to look” but did find many treasures over the years. She also enjoyed driving her 1968 Plymouth Satellite with a Roadrunner engine, which she named “Old Blue”.
Betty was generous with her time making bibs and quilts and volunteering at the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home. She also volunteered many hours to her church, cleaning when needed, acting as team lead for a ladie’s serving group, sewing confirmation gowns, stoles and table runners for the church basement.
She enjoyed speaking the German language that she learned from her parents as a child. Plattdeutsch was heard often in the Eggert household. One of her favorite German comments was “gut schmeckt”, meaning it tastes good.
Betty was blessed to enjoy many journeys with family and friends, whether it was by air, car, Harley, snowmobile, camper or cruise ship. She was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to many States in the US, Northern Minnesota, the Caribbean and Panama Canal.
Betty loved her four-legged friends. She had many cats and dogs during her lifetime. Her dog, Moose, was her best friend and walked with her each morning to get the mail.
Betty let Wayne do the cooking. She was well-known, however, for her cinnamon rice dessert, rhubarb torte, angel food cake and frosted Christmas cookies. The family will truly miss these as no one will prepare them as well as Betty did.
Betty was a Breast Cancer Survivor. Everyone that knew her, recognized her determination and strong will. This was a trait that everyone loved about Betty throughout her lifetime.
Betty especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren provided her with many loving memories.
Betty passed away on Friday, January 12, 2024 at Ecumen Oaks in Hutchinson, Minnesota, at the age of 84 years young. Blessed be her memory.
