I was Denny’s mechanic for many many years before I retired. What a great guy he was! I’m sure that he will be greatly missed by his old associates at DNR. At he same time it will most likely be a great reunion with those who have passed before. I recall many conversations with him over the span of about 40 years. Thank you Denny for having been my friend. Mike Wetzel, Box 178, Pillager, Mn 56473.

I first met Dennis working on Lake of the Woods in 1968. I was working for the UofMN and Dennis for DNR. I later work for DNR and kept in contact with him. He was instrumental in writing the long range plan for walleye. Denny was my go to person for council and mentoring for 35 years while in the DNR. RIP Denny. Bruce Hawkinson
Kathleen Maloney Hermerding says
Growing up next door to Denny on Upper Cullen Lake allowed for many good memories. Many people knew him as a DNR employee. While we knew him as that and as a very good friend of my parents, we Maloney children knew him as the super smart, kind and warm bachelor who lived next to us. As a wee person, Denny would occasionally babysit my sister and me. He had many a story about our antics. On a fairly regular basis in the summers, he would join us for Saturday night hamburgers in our screened in porch. We spent many hours watching Denny and his dad Herb clean fish after a day of angling. We thought his cleaning table with the hole in the middle to scrape the guts into a bucket was ingenious. We were easily entertained. We were quite young when our mom unexpectedly passed away, Denny was always there if we needed him. One evening we had a storm with straight lying winds;even though we were in middle school, my younger sister and I were terrified. We grabbed our dog and ran to Denny’s for safety. In his warm and kind style, he took us in and assured us all was well. This summer my family was fortunate enough to have him out to our lake cabin and were entertained for hours with his wisdom and stories. I could go on and on; but will just end my saga here letting all know that Denny was very special to many people.
Tim Brastrup says
I am a DNR fisheries retiree and had the privilege and great fortune to work at the Brainerd office for many years with Denny. He was an amazing gifted man in science and people skills. He touched many lives in the DNR with his kindness, friendship and respect. He has been a grand gentleman to all and his fisheries insight and knowledge is legendary. I have felt so very enriched in life and work having known Denny. He had a very special knack for explaining complex fisheries concepts to all fellow employees and members of the public and making it seem common sense. He valued the human spirit and has been a mentor to us all. Enclosing I want to express my most sincere condolences to your family over your loss. We share your great loss and hope that you will find comfort in knowing that those who knew him are proud and honored to call Denny a friend. May God bless Denny and his family and friends. My husband and I worked with Dennis out of the Brainerd Regional Office for twelve years–Jim as a Conservation and Jean a clerical in Regional Fisheries and Aquatic Plant Management. Such a bright man, and a gentleman with a great sense of humor. He was so proud and fond of his niece and grand nieces, too.
Our Sympathy,
Jim & Jean Forbord

It took me a long time to know what to say, Denny was my older brother, my next door bachelor neighbor, mentor and friend. I miss him greatly. As my sister said he came to our screen porch for Saturday hamburgers and Sunday steaks. Earlier Denny and I would make pizzas on Fridays in the old farmhouse for my family. Denny and my parents often played Monopoly and/or Scrabble. He always beat me at Careers (ugh). Truly an influence on my life.
