Obituary
Dennis Scott Ueland was born September 15, 1964, at St. Mary's Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was the son of Lowell and Marilyn (Edin) Ueland. Dennis was baptized as an infant and was confirmed in his faith as a youth in October of 1980 at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe. He received his elementary and high school education in the Glencoe, Minnesota, and was a graduate of the Glencoe High School class of 1983. He played football and baseball for the Glencoe Eagles. During the summers he was involved with the American Legion and VFW baseball teams. In conversations with him, he said that he liked summer baseball a lot more than high school baseball. Following graduation from high school, Dennis went on to post-secondary school, attending Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He majored in Computer Science. While at Augsburg he played football as a center and kicker. He decided that it was not working and after two years, he dropped out to take programming courses at Control Data Institute in Minneapolis. He finished a self-paced, 6-month course in 4 months. In 1989, upon completion of his course work he went to work for Fairview Hospitals as a Computer Network Engineer in Computer Operations.
The Fairview Hospitals would later become University of Minnesota Medical System-Fairview. His responsibility was to make sure everyone communicates with everyone. His workplace was in the data closet, which is typically a small room or closet that houses the essential network infrastructure of a business or organization. Essential network infrastructure includes the equipment and cabling for the following: wireless access points, security cameras, access control systems, digital signage, alarm systems, and voice and data systems, just to name a few. Depending on the size of the organization there may be a data closet or intermediate distribution frame (IDF) on each floor of the building in addition to one centralized main distribution frame (MDF).
In 1992, he became the third member of the Computer Network Team responsible for the switches and routers of 4 hospitals and 5 other sites. Responsibilities over the years included overseeing network cabling projects, wireless networks, and firewalls, in addition to the routing and switching. At the time of his retirement there were well over 100 sites, including hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and senior living facilities.
Dennis retired in September of 2018 after 29 years of service with the University of Minnesota Medical System-Fairview. In retirement he drove his parents around, enjoyed listening to music, and enjoyed not working. Dennis never married.
Dennis passed away on Monday, October 21, 2024, at his home in Burnsville at the age of 60 years, 1 month, and 6 days.
