Obituary
Dorothy (Schramm) Rose was born on April 13, 1923, on the family farm near Plato, Minnesota. She was the youngest child of Bill (Wilhelm) and Emma (Miller) Schramm. Dorothy was baptized, confirmed in her faith, and married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato. She attended country school in Plato through 8th grade and then attended two years at Glencoe High School. She later attended Keister’s Ladies’ Tailoring and Dressmaking School in Minneapolis, MN, which was taught and managed by the owner, Miss Sadie Walters. She returned to Glencoe after completing this course and worked in a sewing position for Strutwear Industries.
On June 26, 1948, she married Martin Rose. The couple initially resided in Glencoe, until purchasing the farm north of town in 1949, where Dorothy resided until 2003. Dorothy and Martin shared 52 years of marriage until Martin passed away on January 8, 2001. They had two daughters, Brenda and Laurel (Laurie). Dorothy moved to a townhouse in Glencoe in 2003 and lived there for 13 years until an injury resulted in her move into the long-term care unit of Glencoe Regional Health in July of 2016 (now GlenFields). While at GlenFields, Dorothy was known for her easy-going manner and ready laughter.
Dorothy helped on the farm with animal care, gardening, and a variety of tasks. She also worked in the frozen food area at Green Giant (Glencoe) for many years until her retirement. Dorothy continued to use her creative skills in sewing over many years, starting on a treadle sewing machine – making many unique matching dresses for the girls. She also did some crocheting and quilting but found a true passion for painting in her later crafting years, after taking a Rosemaling class. Martin would make wood items and Dorothy would add the painted finishing touches. The two enjoyed traveling on bus tours, driving to visit relatives and friends, and other various sights of interest. Some favorite trips were to New Orleans, Arkansas, Niagara Falls, and Dorothy’s only plane trip – to view the fall foliage of New England with daughter, Laurie, in 2006.
Dorothy enjoyed being a member of a neighborhood University of MN Home Extension group, a weekly Bible study that met for many years at the home of Margie Beneke, attending Tuesday morning Bible studies at First Lutheran Church, playing cards with the Glencoe Senior Citizens group, and rotating card parties with a “widows’ group” of friends in her years at the townhouse. Providing daycare during the early years for her grandchildren was a favorite “job.” She and Martin continued to enjoy time with Alex and Emma, who would often run over to Grandma and Grandpa’s farm, often bringing friends along. Dorothy was an active member of First Lutheran Church’s “Ladies Aid” group (and then the LWML when the Ladies Aid group ended) serving at funerals, weddings, and the past annual Thanksgiving turkey luncheons.
Dorothy had an unwavering faith in God, knew Jesus as her Savior, and was sure of her eternal life in heaven following her transition from this earthly life. Dorothy passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, May 31, 2024, at GlenFields Living With Care in Glencoe at the age of 101 years, 1 month, and 18 days. Blessed be her memory.
