Obituary
Harvey “Skip” Eli Sustacek was born on March 21, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the son of Harvey and Lucille (Peterson) Sustacek. Skip was baptized as an infant on May 11, 1946 at the Methodist Church in Hutchinson, and was confirmed in his faith as an adult at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Mills, Minnesota. He received his education in Hutchinson, Minnesota, and was a graduate of the Hutchinson High School Class of 1961.
On September 8, 1962, Skip was united in marriage to Sharon Schultz at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Mills. This marriage was blessed with four children, Lori, Scott, Sherry and Steven. Skip and Sharon resided in Hutchinson and Darwin. They shared 61 years of marriage.
Throughout their time together, Skip and Sharon thoroughly enjoyed traveling to many states with family and friends. Skip cherished the memories, laughs and good times shared on trips to NASCAR races, Mexico, and Key West, and always looked forward to the next adventure.
Skip was employed at Goebel Fixture Company in Hutchinson. Over his 50-year career at Goebel’s, he worked in many roles, ultimately becoming the installation supervisor where he traveled the country putting Goebel’s products in high-end retail stores including Nordstrom, Sak’s, and Macy’s. He excelled in this role and truly loved being able to meet new people and develop relationships and friends along the way. He retired in 2011.
In addition to his work, Skip had a wide range of interests which fed his desire to build lasting relationships with others through serving. He was most recently a member at Peace Lutheran Church. Strong in faith, he was always eager to be involved in his congregation and helped make the church a welcoming place for all who worshipped there. He was also a member at Faith Lutheran Church, Our Saviors Lutheran Church and All Saints Lutheran Church where he developed lifelong friends and help each church carry out their mission.
He was a long-time member of the Hutch Drift Riders and spearheaded their involvement in the Luce Line trail development as well as running the demolition derby at the McLeod County Fair and numerous snowmobile races. His involvement and leadership in the Hutch Open wrestling tournament helped turn it into a premier wrestling tournament in the state. He was also an active member of the Darwin Lions and the Lake Washington Lake Association. For Skip, it was about the importance of a clean lake and connecting with people.
Skip enjoyed the outdoors and his time on Lake Washington with Sharon. He loved spending time with family and friends whenever the opportunity arose. He was always working on a project at his home or for one his kids. Skip’s grandchildren were his pride and joy. He was their biggest fan and loved seeing them grow and watching them participate in a variety of sporting events and activities.
