He lived with his parents; sisters; Marcia, Sheila and Cindy; and brother; Tom, in Fridley. When he was 17 years old he joined the Army and was deployed to Vietnam. Herb and Martha built a home in Wisconsin and bought a restaurant called Oak Lake Inn. During that time, Herb discovered a passion for cooking. They moved back to Minnesota in 2003 and Herb enrolled in cooking classes at the Hennepin Technical College to become a chef. He cooked at various restaurants until he had to retire in 2008 due to service related health issues. Herb and Martha lived in Lester Prairie for the past 14 years.
