Obituary

Herbert “Herb” John Bloom was born on July 16, 1952, in Fridley, Minnesota, to Herbert John and Audrey (Hochstedler) Bloom Sr. He became a child of God when he was baptized as an infant. He lived with his parents; sisters; Marcia, Sheila and Cindy; and brother; Tom, in Fridley. When he was 17 years old he joined the Army and was deployed to Vietnam. While in the service, he worked as an Aircraft Turbine Mechanic. Herb was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter Badge M-16, Vietnam Service Medal with two Campaign Stars, Overseas Service Bar, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and 2nd Class Badge for Hand Grenade. When he got out of the service, Herb joined his father at Goodin Company and worked there for many years.

In the fall of 1984, Herb met Martha Horsch and they were united in marriage on August 10, 1985, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. Herb and Martha built a home in Wisconsin and bought a restaurant called Oak Lake Inn. During that time, Herb discovered a passion for cooking. They moved back to Minnesota in 2003 and Herb enrolled in cooking classes at the Hennepin Technical College to become a chef. He cooked at various restaurants until he had to retire in 2008 due to service related health issues. Herb and Martha lived in Lester Prairie for the past 14 years.

Their neighbor, Doug Ulrick, became an invaluable friend to Herb. It was common to see them sitting on their riding lawn mowers just chatting. Herb enjoyed weekends and vacations at their cabin near Litchfield. He used his excellent carpentry and plumbing skills at all of their homes. Herb also enjoyed watching sports on the television and his classic cars which included a 1967 GTO, 1970 Chevelle and 1961 Thunderbird. His dog, Shelby, was his constant companion and he loved to spoil and play catch with her.

Herb passed away on Friday, June 21, 2019, at his cabin near Litchfield, Minnesota, at the age of 66 years, 11 months and 5 days.

Blessed be his memory.
