Jerome Ewert age 95 of Stewart, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2015 at the Buffalo Lake Health Care Center.
Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, June 12, 2015 at 2:00 pm at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart, with interment in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2015 from 4:00-8:00 pm at Hughes-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Stewart. *Also 1 hour prior to the service at church.
Obituary
Jerome Ewert was born February 2, 1920 in Collins Township, McLeod County, Stewart, Minnesota. He was one on nine children born to Anton and Annie (Klinkhammer) Ewert. He reached the age of 95 years, 4 months, 5 days.
Jerome was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart. He attended District 61 School in Collins Township and St. Boniface School. Jerome was a life and faithful member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church. He belonged to the Stewart Lions, Stewart Fire Department for 31 years, Knights of Columbus for 65 years, and the American Legion for 70 years.
Jerome was a Farm Drainage Contractor for many years. He dug by hand (sometimes dug 12 feet deep by hand) until he bought his first trencher in 1948. He worked with his brother Lorney for 35 years. They installed tile in the following counties: McLeod, Meeker, Sibley, Renville, Redwood, Swift, Brown, Carver and Kandiyohi. They installed hundreds of thousands of miles of tile. Dad retired in 1982, when Jack and Jerry purchased the business. DAD RE-RETIRED IN 1985!!!
Jerome served in the Army from 1945-1946 and was stationed at Fort Hancock, NJ. In 1947 Jerome was united in marriage to Evelyn Winkler. They enjoyed over 61 years of marriage until Evelyn’s death in 2008.
Jerome enjoyed CARD PLAYING, fishing - summer and winter, bowling, visiting with friends and family. He loved eating out, reading and word finds. He was an avid Twins fan, enjoyed Wheel of Fortune and never missed Monday & Thursday nights watching wrestling. He also enjoyed a good Manhatten, Baileys Irish Creme and his tumbler of wine every night before bed. His mind was as sharp as a tack right up until the very end. Jerome also enjoyed telling jokes and stories.
He will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him. He will live on in our hearts forever. Jerome is survived by six children and their families, Wayne (Kay) Black, Connie (Cyril) Woelfel, Cecelia (Mike) Cullen, Kathleen (Peter) Kalenberg, Jerry (Kathy) Ewert and Jack (Yvonne) Ewert. Jerome is also survived by grand- children: Penny Arnold, Dean Black, Cherie Johnson, Carrie Flaig, Kurt Kalenberg, Shay Stancek, Shannon Koenig, Patrick Cullen, Andy Cullen, Sarah Heller, Dan Ewert, Luke Ewert, Kyle Ewert, Heidi Ewert and Tessa Ewert and many great grandchildren; sisters, Jeanne Thill and Regina Willman.
Preceded in death by wife Evelyn, sisters: Frances Ewert, Nora Ewert, Theresa Bauman, brothers: Richard Ewert, Lorney Ewert and Raymond Ewert.
