Lyle Block

Obituary

Lyle A. Block was born on June 27, 1936, in Sumter Township, McLeod County, Minnesota. He was the son of Alfred and Ella (Block) Block. Lyle was baptized as an infant on July 12, 1936, and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth on September 25, 1949.  He received his education in Hutchinson, and was a graduate of the Hutchinson High School Class of 1953. He continued his education at St. Cloud State for one year.

Lyle enlisted in the United States National Guard on November 22, 1960, in Hutchinson. He served as a member of Co C 682^nd Engr Bn. He received an Honorable Discharge on November 21, 1966, in Hutchinson and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.

On August 29, 1954, Lyle was united in marriage to Jerene Veenhuis at the Vineyard United Methodist Church in Hutchinson. This marriage was blessed with 3 sons, Michael, Greg and David. Lyle and Jerene resided in Hutchinson from 1954-1996, and moved to Mesa, Arizona, where they lived from 1996-2013.  They later moved to Austin, Texas. Lyle and Jerene shared 60 years of marriage, until Jerene passed away on August 18, 2014.

Lyle was employed at 3M in Hutchinson, and retired in 1996, after 36 years and served as a 3M Cares board member. Lyle was a Hutchinson Jaycees member from 1959-1971.  He served as a chapter secretary, Vice President, President, and Local and District Parliamentarian and was a State and National Convention delegate. In 1999, Lyle was honored as the Jaycees Mr. Hutchinson. Lyle was a Viking Cub Scout Pack Committee chairman and Viking Council Finance Chairman, each for two years. Lyle was also a member of the American Legion Post #96 in Hutchinson. Lyle was a committee member on school bond issues and helped organize Hutchinson Recreational youth football. He served as a member of the Hutchinson Park and Recreational board for three 3-year terms, on the Executive board for Kiwanis for three years and food booth chairman at the McLeod County Fair for two years. He was the Minnesota Amateur Hockey Association District 9 Secretary, Vice President and President, District 5 Vice President and President, and President for Hutchinson Youth Hockey Association. Lyle was the HYHA coach, referee-in-chief, and tournament director for many years. He was active in the fund raising committee to help build the hockey arena. He served as a building committee treasurer, and was a member of the Hutchinson Ice Arena Board of Directors for one year as a secretary. Lyle was an active member of Vineyard United Methodist Church for many years and was a Sunday school superintendent for eleven years. He served two 3-year terms as Staff Parish relations Committee; three of those years as chairman, one three-year term on the Administrative Board and was the Sunday morning service liturgist. Lyle enjoyed Pinochle, Farkle, board games, and many other card games. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends.

Lyle passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2016, at Cornerstone Hospital in Round Rock, Texas, at the age of 79 years.
