Service Information
Margaret Janette Kuphal, age 87 years, 1 month short of her 88th birthday, of Gaylord passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at Sunrise of Minnetonka in Minnetonka.
Funeral Service will be Saturday, November 16, 2024, 11:00 A.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord with interment in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday, November 15, 2024, from 4:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. and will continue one hour prior to the service on Saturday, ALL at the church.
Obituary
Margaret Janette Kuphal was born on December 16, 1936, in Winthrop, Minnesota. She was the daughter of John and Anna (Kaufmann) Soehl. Janette was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth, both at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop, Minnesota. She received her education in Winthrop, Minnesota, and was a graduate of the Winthrop High School Class of 1954. She furthered her education getting her Undergraduate Degree (Bachelor of Science) and Master’s Degree in Education at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota.
On September 6, 1957, Janette was united in marriage to Sidney Kuphal at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop, Minnesota. After their marriage, the couple resided in Gaylord, Minnesota. Janette and Sidney were blessed with three children. She was a Kindergarten teacher in Gaylord, Minnesota for 36 years, retiring in 1999. Janette and Sidney shared 50 years of marriage when he passed away on January 24, 2008.
Janette was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord, was a member of the choir, handbell choir, Ladies Aide, and Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Home Extension. Janette volunteered at the Gaylord Nursing Home, where she set hair, read to, and played cards with the residents, and was a hospice volunteer.
Janette enjoyed riding her bicycle, reading, doing crossword puzzles, gardening, yard work, playing cards, traveling, going to Horseshoe Lake with family, music, concerts, golfing in her early years, and family vacation trips. She loved learning about different cultures and her curiosity was never-ending. Janette cherished the time she spent with her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
When she needed assistance with her care, Janette became a resident of Sunrise of Minnetonka on February 6. 2021, and passed away there on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at the age of 87 years. Blessed be her memory. Thank you to the wonderful staff who cared for Janette/Mom while living at Sunrise.

Grandchildren, Brandon Kuphal, Anna Lunzer, Ryan (Brooke) Kuphal, Emily Lunzer (Auston Elliott), and Madeline Lunzer;
Great-grandchildren, Quinn, Mila and Graham Kuphal;
Sisters-in-law, Doris Martens, Lorna Kuphal, LuAnn Kuphal, Susan Kuphal;
Brother-in-law, Walter Ahrens of Winthrop, MN;
Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Janette was preceded in death by her Parents, John and Anna Soehl; Husband, Sidney Kuphal; Granddaughter, Abby Kuphal; Sister, Joanne Ahrens; Brothers-in-law and Sisters-in-law, Kenneth Martens, Alton (Deloris) Swanson, Irwin (Liz) Kuphal, Marvin (Janice) Kuphal, Albert Kuphal, Martin Jr. Kuphal, Karl Kuphal.

Hi Myrtle – Mom enjoyed seeing everyone at the reunion. I also enjoyed visiting with everyone. She was a fighter while in Hospice care for the last 2 months.

So sorry to hear of this loss. She was a wonderful teacher and friend of the 2nd Street neighborhood while I was growing up. I remember many days riding bike around the neighborhood and she andSid would always make time to chat and check on all us kids.

Thank you Katie. Mom loved teaching. Someone was always saying ‘Hi Mrs. Kuphal’ when we were out & about. The neighbors on 2nd street were the best. Both mom & dad enjoyed it when the kids and neighbors would stop by to say ‘Hi’.

Mrs. Kuphal made kindergarten so fun! I can still smell her classroom sometimes and it makes me think of her and Mrs.Goetsch. She was such a gentle teacher and I am thankful to have had her for a teacher.
