Obituary
Marilyn Lee Patten was born on May 2, 1932, to Lindley H. and Jane (Padgett) Patten, in Grand Forks, North Dakota. At age 7, she moved with her family to Glencoe, Minnesota. Marilyn graduated from Glencoe High School in 1950, and then attended Hamline University in St. Paul. In 1952, she married Burton P. Mahle, and they had two children, Janet and Scott.
For many years, the Mahles lived in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, where Marilyn was well-known as a vocal soloist and stage performer in the community productions. She had numerous collections, owned an antiques and collectibles business, and gave popular humorous presentations featuring hats and jewelry from her extensive collections. She was a “collector of many things old.”
Marilyn was an excellent cook, and loved to bake breads and rolls of all kinds. She was remarkably generous and cared for many friends and neighbors in need, offering both home-cooked food and companionship. Marilyn not only enjoyed singing as a career, she also enjoyed singing to sing! She was not shy of performing on stage; she was an actress, a stand-up comedian and played the tenor saxophone.
When Burt retired from Iowa Wesleyan University in 1990, he and Marilyn moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where they sang in several church choirs, and in the Choral Arts Ensemble.
After Burt’s passing in 2007, Marilyn reconnected with her high school sweetheart from Glencoe, James Mayer, and they were married in 2010. They made their home in Glencoe. Marilyn was a faithful member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.
