Obituary
Marvel Anna Elsie (Petzel) Glander was born on July 24, 1925, in Arlington, Minnesota, to August and Anna (Suemnick) Petzel. Marvel was baptized as an infant and confirmed in her faith as a youth at St. John’s Lutheran Church in New Rome, Minnesota. She was educated at the nearby District 6 Country School.
On March 29, 1946, Marvel was united in marriage to LeRoy Glander by Rev. Vriesen at St. John’s Lutheran Church in New Rome, Minnesota. Marvel and LeRoy’s marriage was blessed with two children, LeRoy, Jr. and Cheryl. The couple shared over 53 comfortable years of marriage, until LeRoy passed away on October 29, 1999.
Marvel and LeRoy together were a hardworking team, content in working side-by-side with one another. When they were first married, they headed north to run a resort in Black Duck, Minnesota. In 1951, they purchased the building that soon became known as Glander’s Grocery Store, filling a basic need for residents in Hamburg, Minnesota. They operated the store until 1988, and during those years Marvel became known as a friendly face in the community to all. Marvel was a faithful and active member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Reformed Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and was active in the church choir and Women’s Guild.
Marvel enjoyed artsy things, from wood art to embroidering to quilting. She prided in her beautiful flower gardens. Marvel’s summers were spent fishing at the family’s beloved cabin on Blueberry Lake in Menahga, Minnesota. Marvel was an excellent cook, and a few years ago, she and her daughter compiled favorites into a family cookbook, complete with tips and recipe origins. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will keep her memory alive through her recipes at family get-togethers and potlucks now and into future generations. Marvel loved to play games, especially cards. She was a loyal supporter to those she loved and cherished her time spent with family and friends.
