Obituary
Matthew “Matt” Kevin Ostlund was born on January 23, 1973, in Hutchinson, Minnesota. He was the son of Jeanette Gunnerson (Harris) and Kevin Ostlund. Matt was baptized at Gethsemane Lutheran in Dassel, Minnesota, and was confirmed in his faith at Our Savior's Lutheran in Hutchinson. He attended Our Savior's Lutheran School for his primary education. While he was there, he made some life-long friends, including his best friend, Brandon Berwald, of Hutchinson. He received his high school education in Hutchinson and Annandale, Minnesota, graduating from Annandale High School in 1991. Matt began his post-secondary education at Northwestern University in St Paul, Minnesota, and earned his Bachelor's degree from Concordia University in St. Paul, majoring in Church Music. He was very proud of his college education and gained many life-long contacts and friends while studying.
Matt worked remotely with Resound Hearing Aids from his residence in Newcastle, Wyoming. He had a love for all things musical, just like his Grandpa Jim. Matt enjoyed playing piano and any number of stringed instruments, and taught piano to many students. He also enjoyed playing cards, exploring video game communities and tactics, and programming. Matt particularly enjoyed preparing meals for friends and family.
Matt was the kind of person who kept track of his friends and family better than most. He had a big heart and wanted those who were acquainted with him to know that they were loved and appreciated. Matt loved the Lord and was active in church music and in many church gatherings.

As far as cousin’s go Matt was my closest, in age and adventures. We spent our youth spending much time together and that continued into adulthood, later with him being a guiding light to my daughter, Phedon. I’d like to think they’re adventuring together up in heaven now. I’ll miss you, cuz.

Matt was a great guy I’d met through the Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask speedrunning community about 10 years ago. He had made a lot of friends there and was always a pleasure to talk to. We’ve shared a lot of laughs together, and he shared a lot of great recipes with my wife and I, a lot of people there will miss him. I’m sorry for the Ostlund family, he will be missed but not forgotten.

I met Matt through Severed Speedruns initially, however we started talking more in Discord DMs. He was such a great guy. I think I got him into Rubik’s cubes, and he fell down the rabbit hole from there, evening inspiring me to get some crazy puzzles he had solved. We would always chat about speedcubing methods and different puzzles (he was dead set on learning Roux), then we found out we both like music and computers. From there I really felt like I found a great friend and we talked about anything and everything for years. From asking each other computer questions, to me showing him different algos (he would always call algorithms algos) for the Rubik’s cube. I had so many fun memories with him even though I never met him in person. He even sold me some of his computer parts. I will never forget Matt and I miss him so much.
Andrew Ostlund says
He must have had 100 Rubics Cubes!!

Matt watched me grow up and became a close friend over the years as he lived in Newcastle. He was the type of guy who remembered small details and who was there for you no matter what. My condolences go out to his family and those who were lucky to call him a friend. May he find light in the Lord’s arms and be welcomed back home in Heaven.

I loved that Matthew and My Dad, Joe were huge wrestling fans, and I loved it when they had their fun. Every big wrestling event, they would call and they would talk and watch, it was great. I knew how much he loved his music, and his family. He loved family, he came over to our place for christmas and he was really happy that he was with his family, he even brought the stomach flu to his Parents, he caught it from me. I loved him so much and he will always be in my heart. I miss Matthew…
