Melvin Wolter, age 93, of Lester Prairie, Minnesota, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Society in Waconia, Minnesota.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, September 6, 2016, 11:00 A.M. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, Minnesota, with interment following at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 6, 2016, from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M., two hours prior the service at the church.
Obituary
Melvin Albert George Wolter was born on September 18, 1922, at the family farm in Bergen Township, McLeod County, Minnesota. He was the son of J. Peter and Margaretha (Engelmann) Wolter. Melvin was baptized as an infant on October 1, 1922 by Rev. Rhinhold Zwintscher and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth on April 5, 1936, by Rev. Ruben L. Ehlen both at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato, Minnesota. He attended District 19 country school in Bergen Township and St. John’s parochial school in Plato, MN. As a teenager he worked for area farmers.
On September 8, 1946, Melvin was united in marriage to LaVerna Birkholz by Rev. Berthold Streufert at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, Minnesota. The couple lived with LaVerna’s parents on the farm and in 1960 moved to their new home, which Melvin’s crew built, in Lester Prairie, Minnesota. In September of 2010, Melvin moved to Grand Meadows Senior Living in Glencoe, Minnesota, and then on July 26, 2016, he became a resident of Waconia Good Samaritan Society in Waconia, Minnesota. Melvin and LaVerna shared over 57 years of marriage, until LaVerna passed away on October 13, 2004.
Melvin drove milk and gas trucks for Henry Fruetel. In 1952, he started construction work for Herb Birkholz, retiring in November of 1986. Melvin was an active member at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder, treasurer, and on the building committee for the new church building in 1965 and 1966.
Melvin enjoyed farming, carpentry work, building the model of the first St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, scrapbooking, playing cards and puzzles. He loved helping others. Melvin cherished the time spent with his family and friends.
Melvin passed away peacefully on September 2, 2016, at Waconia Good Samaritan Society in Waconia, Minnesota, at the age of 93 years, 11 months and 15 days.

Melvin is preceded in death by his Parents, J. Peter and Margaretha Wolter; Wife, LaVerna Wolter; Father-In-Law & Mother-In-Law, Fred and Elsie Birkholz; Brothers, Raymond (Ruth) Wolter, Edmund Wolter, Orville Wolter, Maynard (Elizabeth) Wolter, Ardell (Erna) Wolter; Sister, Laverna (Erwin) Miller.
