Melvin W. Polzin

Obituary

Melvin Walter Alfred Polzin was born on March 24, 1929, in Round Grove Township, McLeod County, Minnesota. He was the son of William and Emma (Hahn) Polzin. He was baptized as an infant on April 14, 1929, and confirmed in his faith on July 19, 1942, both at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bismarck Township, Sibley County, Minnesota. He received his education in Winthrop.

Melvin entered active military service in the United States Army on January 29, 1951. He served during the Korean War. Melvin was transferred to the United States Army Reserve on January 31, 1953. He was honorably discharged on January 22, 1957, having achieved the rank of Pfc (T).

On June 7, 1957, Melvin was united in marriage to Betty Jean Breuer at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Gaylord, Minnesota. This marriage was blessed with four children, Kimberly, Shawn, Cheyene, and Chanda. Melvin and Betty resided in Winthrop. They shared 39 years of marriage until the passing of Betty Jean on March 26, 1997.

Melvin was employed at Dairy Farmers of America until his retirement in 1994. He was very active in the Winthrop VFW Post 4078 and Ernest Gedig American Legion Post 314. Melvin was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Winthrop.

Melvin enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and watching Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings games. He also liked visiting with the guys uptown and driving around with his brother, Ervin.

Melvin passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Society in Winthrop, at the age of 90 years.

Melvin was preceded in death by his Parents, William and Emma Polzin; Wife, Betty Jean Polzin; Daughters, Kimberly Melius, Cheyene Melmer; Siblings, Ervin Polzin, Lorraine Thorn, Lucille O’Malley.
