Merlyn Monson

Obituary

Merlyn James Monson was born on July 22, 1928, at his family’s home in New Sweden Township, Nicollet County, Minnesota.  He was the son of Arnold and Florence (Lewellen) Monson.  He was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth in 1941 at the Lafayette Church in Lafayette, Minnesota.  Merlyn received his early education at country school in Lafayette, and was a graduate of the St. Peter Elementary School 8^th Grade Class of 1943.

On August 9, 1947, Merlyn was united in marriage to Donna Larson on the Family Farm near Bernadotte, Minnesota.  This marriage was blessed with six children.   Merlyn and Donna farmed in Sibley County, Minnesota, until 1970, when they moved to a hobby farm in rural Hutchinson, Minnesota and raised Quarter Horses.     

Merlyn was a lifelong farmer.  He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, and was also a member of the American Quarter Horse Association since 1964.

Merlyn’s passion was raising horses.   He enjoyed horse shows and camping in the travel trailer.   In his later years Merlyn enjoyed the company of his coffee group.   He cherished the time he spent with his boys and their families. 

Merlyn passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the age of 88 years.  

He will be dearly missed.

Sister-In-Law, Sylvia Monson;
Nieces, Nephews, many other relatives and friends.

Merlyn is preceded in death by his Parents, Arnold and Florence Monson; Wife, Donna Monson; Daughter, Wendy Monson; Sons, Randy Monson and David Monson; Granddaughter, Shari Monson; Brothers, Darroll Monson, Roland Monson; Sister, Carol Young; Brothers-In-Law and Sisters-In-Law.
