Obituary
Muriel Fern Larson was born on June 29, 1918, at home in Inez, Minnesota, (Inez later changed to Black Duck, Minnesota). Her parents were David and Florence (Anderson) Wester. She went to school through sixth grade in Inez, Minnesota. At 13, she moved to Bemidji, Minnesota, to stay with her aunt, Dorothy Blesi in order to complete her schooling. She would have had no transportation to high school if she had stayed at home with her immediate family. She graduated in 1935, from Bemidji High School and then worked for the Youth Administration until the start of WWII.
In 1940, Muriel married Harry Larson. They moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Soon after the marriage, Muriel began employment at Sears & Roebuck and worked there until they moved to Marshall, Minnesota, in 1945, to own and operate a Surge Dairy Farm Equipment Co. They sold that a few years later and moved back to Minneapolis where Muriel regained her employment with Sears until her retirement in the early 1980’s. She had been with Sears for 35 years total. They shared 23 years of marriage, until Harry passed away suddenly in 1963.
In Muriel’s retirement, she traveled with friends. She took up China Painting and traveled to shows and exhibits. Muriel excelled at China Painting and received the status of “professional” in that hobby.
In 2000, Muriel moved to Brownton, Minnesota, to be near her sister, LaVerne Riemann who is 10 years younger. After a struggle with breast cancer in 2001, Muriel had a successful recovery. She loved being a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Brownton. She enjoyed flower gardening, embroidery, visiting with good friends, shopping and sorting through 90 years of family “STUFF”.
In 2007, Muriel had her second round of breast cancer and she had great success this time also. As of 2014, her oncologist told her that she was in the clear and that was great news for everyone to hear.
In November of 2012, Muriel had a small fracture on her right hand and was unable to stay alone so that led to a “short stay” at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care. She enjoyed herself so much she asked to stay. She was 94 years old at that time. She loved the people and especially the food.
When she was asked what she attributed her great health and age to she’d always respond “My father was a good provider, my mother was a good cook and I was a darn good eater!” She was living proof of that. She was the “Lady who no one could NOT love”. Muriel was diagnosed with dementia in the years before being admitted to the nursing home, and that progressed until her death at age 97, at Long Term Care in Glencoe, Minnesota.
Muriel passed away on Friday, March 25, 2016, at the Glencoe Regional Services Long Term Care in Glencoe, Minnesota, at the age of 97 years.
