Mark Santelman (Hutch '76 grad) says
My twin-sister Mary and I moved to Hutch in 1969 because Mom & Dad bought the A&W Drive-in and the first employee I met was Paul Schmidt. My earliest memory of Paul was him saying, “I’m taking some of my brothers to the Twins game, do you want to go with us? I think you and Bruce will get along.” I looked at my parents and they said, “Sure.” Our families have been friends ever since.
My parents took great pride in the fact that all seven of the Schmidts (Paul, Gary, Roger, David, Bruce, Sara, Dale) had their first jobs either with Mom & Dad at the A&W or with Bruce & Rosie at the Country Kitchen and that Leroy was our milkman for both restaurants. Paul and his siblings were all great employees. And when they had the “Dairy” downtown where the Hutch Liquor is now, their mother Harriet made the best Chocolate Malt anywhere in town.
Thankfully, my wife Martha and I got to see Paul a few months ago at his farewell party. Our eyes watered as we said good-bye to each other but we both knew we would reunite in heaven with our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Blessed be his memory.

To my dear friend, Paul. May you rest in God’s arms now. Say hello to your mom and dad for me. Also, please tell MY mom hello! Now you can see all of the musicians who have passed before you. I will miss you. You and I shared the love of music and many laughs and talks. Thanks, Paul, for being an awesome friend, and like a brother to me!!! Until we meet again!!!
