Obituary
Phyllis Jean (Engberg) Mattson was born in Slayton, MN, on July 21, 1936, to Aris and Edith (Widboom) Engberg. She grew up on a farm near Slayton, MN. Phyllis graduated from Tracy High School in 1954, and from Bethel College in 1956, with an Associate of Arts degree. She accepted the Lord Jesus as her Savior at a young age through the ministry of Lake Sarah Baptist Church where she was baptized as a believer. Her faith was marked by steady perseverance through the joys and challenges she faced. Phyllis was faithful to her Lord her entire life.
On June 21, 1958, Phyllis was united in marriage to Dennis Mattson in Slayton. Their marriage was blessed with two children: Robert (Terri) and Marcia (Rick) Stapleton, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. They resided in Bloomington, MN, Sunland, CA, and Surprise, AZ. Dennis passed away in 2003 in Arizona. Thirteen years later, Phyllis moved to Hutchinson, MN, to be closer to family, which was such a blessing for her entire family. She was a member of CrossPoint Church.
Her life was devoted to homemaking, and, in later years, Phyllis was employed in several secretarial jobs. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her biggest joy. Phyllis was very committed to using her gifts in the local church wherever she lived. She enjoyed family time, sewing, baking, and took up downhill skiing in her late thirties. Phyllis loved playing games, traveling, and the Minnesota Twins. She sang in the choir, volunteered in various roles, including Awana, women’s ministry, and Spring Training for the Kansas City Royals in Arizona.
Phyllis is survived by her:
Two Children, Bob and Marcy;
Daughter-in-law Terri;
Son-in-law Rick;
Eight Grandchildren: Naomi (Gabe), David (Lauren), Luke, Allison (Blake), Joel (Becca), Anna (Ezra), Jonathan, and Calvin;
Five Great-grandchildren: Lacey, Weston, Hudson, Chloe, and June.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her Husband, Dennis; Grandson, Robbie; Sister, Eunice Rongstad; Two Brothers, Les and Gordon Engberg; and Parents, Aris and Edith Engberg.
All of her family are grateful to God for the 87 years of her life and the blessing she was to us.

My condolences to the family of Phyllis Mattson. I have known her since the early 80’s when Dennis came to work as an Administrative Pastor at First Baptist Church at La Crescenta, California and he was my boss. When I went on vacation or had surgery Phyllis would come in and do my job and she did an amazing job. She sang in the church choir, did AWANA, was a member of the JOY group and helped in the nursery and with the MOPS (Mother’s of Pre-schoolers), she was in Bible study with my parents and had Christmas parties at their home in Sunland, CA for the church staff. She was an awesome lady who loved everyone and loved Lord with all her heart and all her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and all her friends too. What a privilege to know this lady, her husband (Dennis) and her son (Robert) his wife Terri, daughter (Marcia), grandchildren. God bless you all and give you peace and comfort at this time.
