Carol Field Weist says
We still have the picture of a red poppy like grandma Stella Field used to grow with a bluebell on a slender stem arching over it that was Aunt Rose and Uncle Mel’s wedding gift to us. Then there is Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus which she did the cutting for the printing. Made some apricot kolaches using my great grandma Bell’s icebox roll recipe. I don’t use lard, have substituted oil, and when my dad James Field tasted them back when we lived in North Dakota he recognized the taste from back when Aunt Rose and Grandma Bell baked in the kitchen while her mother Stella Bell Field gardened, plenty of flowers and vegetables. Aunt Rose told me the secret to making the kolaches hold together on top while still letting the filling peek through. From your piece of flattened dough, pull up a pair of rabbit ears from opposite corners after having dipped your finger in some milk and twist that pair. Then do the remaining pair. She had a wry sense of humor about being the only sister with four lively brothers. When she ended up with a trio of boys she delighted in all the structures made from blankets and furniture and other things inventively used in the living room and the events that unfolded within them. She had waited a long time for them and the time would be too short before they were off finding their way in the world to worry about her living room looking like a picture in Better Homes and Gardens.
