Obituary
Shirley Ann Crotteau was born on July 26, 1934 in Dodge Center, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Delma Duane and Fairie (Miller) Daggett. Shirley was baptized as an adult December 8, 1974 at Vineyard United Methodist Church. She received her education in Rice Lake, Wisconsin and was a graduate of the Rice Lake High School class of 1952.
On December 21, 1954, Shirley was united in marriage to Delbert Crotteau at Los Felix Methodist Church in Los Angeles, California. This marriage was blessed with 4 children, Daniel, Dawn, Debra, and Shelly. Shirley and Delbert began their life together at Camp Pendleton, CA, where Del was stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps. They lived in southern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa before settling with their family in Hutchinson in 1970. They shared 69 years of marriage.
Shirley enjoyed working and staying busy, collecting stories from the various jobs she held over the years such as file clerk, receptionist, switchboard operator, long distance telephone operator, and nurses’ aide. However, she retired in 1990 so she could care for her grandchildren full time, which was her most important and beloved job of all. As the grandkids all started school, she stayed busy as an active member of Vineyard United Methodist Church, serving on the mission committee, caring committee, prayer chain, annual turkey supper, and as the sole custodian. Shirley was also a member of the Hutchinson Lioness.
As Shirley and Del enjoyed living full-time at Lake Erie, she lovingly tended to her lush garden and flowers on the property. She had a green thumb and had the most colorful yard on the street. Somehow the grandkids amazingly did not destroy it. She also enjoyed making floral arrangements, reading, and traveling. Shirley and Del traveled to all of the lower 48 states, taking long trips each winter and shorter camping trips in the summers, even taking a few of the grandkids at a time camping in the RV. They collected many stories, photos, and rocks and leaves along the way. Shirley especially loved spending time with the kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and friends.
Shirley passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at her home in Hutchinson, at the age of 89 years.
