Sophia Dwyer, age 91, of Glencoe, formerly of Stewart, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2016, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.
Funeral Service will be held Friday, August 12, 2016, at 1:00 P.M. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart.
Interment will be held in the Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 12, 2016, from 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart.
Obituary
Sophia (Sommerfeld) Dwyer was born October 20, 1924, in Michigan, North Dakota, in Grand Forks County, on the family farm. She was the daughter of Julius and Emile Sommerfeld. Sophia was baptized as an infant and confirmed in her faith, both at Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church in Michigan, North Dakota. Sophia attended school at the Michigan City Public School.
On November 24, 1942, Sophia was united in marriage to Orville Dwyer. They were blessed with four children, Ilene, Linda, Kenneth, and Elaine. After their marriage, they resided in Niagra and Hankinson in North Dakota until they moved to Stewart, Minnesota, where they retired. They shared 53 years together.
Sophia was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a wonderful homemaker. She worked for the Stewart Bowling Alley / Dairy Queen, Fingerhut in Gaylord, and Wiman Factory in Bird Island. Sophia loved to dance, cook, embroider, read, and tend to her flower gardens. One of her greatest blessings was her family, and she cherished each moment she was able to spend with them.
Sophia was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir.
On Saturday, August 6, 2016, Sophia passed away at the Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care, having reached the age of 91 years. Blessed be her memory.
Sophia is survived by her:
Children: Ilene Penk and her husband Jerome of Brownton,
Elaine Tabbert and her husband Gary of Glencoe;
Daughter-in-law, Sue Dwyer of Brownton;
Son-in-law, Mike Maiers of Hutchinson;
Brother, Gad Sommerfeld and his wife Gladys of Grand Forks, North Dakota;
13 Grandchildren; 22 Great-Grandchildren; 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren;
Nieces, Nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Sophia was preceded in death by her Parents, Julius and Emily Sommerfeld, Husband Orville, Daughter Linda Maiers, Son Kenneth Dwyer, Granddaughter Shelly Tabbert, three sisters and six brothers and their spouses.
