Obituary
Vernon Emil Otto Engelmann was born on January 24, 1926, on the farm near Plato, Minnesota. He was the son of John and Ida (Schramm) Engelmann. Vernon was baptized as an infant on February 7, 1926, by Rev. R. Zwintsher. He was confirmed in his faith as a youth on March 17, 1940, by Rev. R. L. Ehlen. Both of these occurred at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato, Minnesota. He received his education in Glencoe, Minnesota, graduating with the Glencoe High School Class of 1944.
On June 5, 1949, Vernon was united in marriage to Delores Engelke by Rev. L. Wohlfeil at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, Minnesota. Vernon and Delores made their home on the farm until 2009 when they moved to an apartment at Grand Meadows Senior Living in Glencoe. In March of 2015, Vernon became a resident of Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care. Their marriage was blessed with six children, Jolene, Barbara, Lyle, Lori, Wendy and Becky. Vernon and Delores shared over 65 years of marriage together until Delores passed away on September 9, 2014.
Faith, family and the farm were Vernon's priorities. He loved being a farmer on the land where he was born: a designated “Century Farm” that has been in the family for over 100 years. He had a tender spot for his cows. Time away was spent traveling, fishing and attending auctions.
Vernon had a dry sense of humor and loved to visit with others. He was a member of the Plato town baseball team in his early days and enjoyed attending their games in later years. He enjoyed listening to "old time music" and watching Lawrence Welk and Bandwagon. Vernon treasured all the moments he spent with his children, grandchildren and their families.
Vernon was a lifelong faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato, Minnesota, where he served on the Board of Education.
Vernon passed away on November 16, 2016, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care in Glencoe, Minnesota, at the age of 90 years, 9 months and 23 days.
